Announcement and Call for Papers
24 - 26 September 2001
Host
The newly established Language Centre at Universiti Brunei Darussalam is
pleased to announce its first International Conference, organised in
collaboration with the Department of English Language and Applied
Linguistics and with input from the Department of Malay Language and
Linguistics, Department of Arabic Language and Department of Language
Education.
The conference will be held from Monday 24 to Wednesday 26 September 2001.
Conference Venue
The conference will be held at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Although the
campus is only about 12 km north of the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan,
it is located away from the hustle and bustle of the capital, overlooking
the South China Sea.
Brunei Darussalam is located on the north-western coast of the island of
Borneo. It is bordered on three sides by the Malaysian state of Sarawak and
on the fourth by the South China Sea. It enjoys a warm and sunny climate
throughout the year.
Theme
The theme of the conference is Learning and Teaching Language in a
Multilingual Society.
Objectives
The conference hopes to bring together theorists and practitioners who will
consider and discuss, within the context of a multilingual society, issues
facing teachers and learners in the 21st century. It also hopes to provide
a forum where theorists and practitioners can share their ideas and
experience, and discuss the impact as well as the educational, social and
cultural implications of these on language teaching and learning.
Sub-Themes
The conference will focus on a number of sub-themes including:
· the role of a second language in a multilingual society;
· the role of the mother tongue in the teaching of a second language;
· the pedagogic significance of differences between the mother tongue and a
second language;
· the role of a second language in content learning;
· the role of a second language as a medium of education;
· language learning issues for students from minority language backgrounds;
· approaches, methods and strategies adopted in the teaching of a second
language in multilingual contexts;
· implications of the above for teacher development and education.
As the newly established Language Centre at Universiti Brunei Darussalam
will be primarily involved in the teaching of English, Malay and Arabic in
its daily operations, papers which focus on one or more of these languages
will be particularly welcome.
Language of the Conference
The language of the conference will be English.
Conference Programme
The programme for the conference will include plenary addresses, parallel
sessions and workshops. Several distinguished scholars have been invited to
address the conference, details of which will be included in the second
announcement to be sent out in early June.
Call for Papers
The Organising Committee invites submission of abstracts for papers and
workshops which will deal in one way or another with topics relating to the
sub-themes of this conference. Papers should be significant reports of
original work not published or under submission elsewhere.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is Thursday 31 May 2001. Abstracts
must not be more than 300 words long, preferably in MS Word format, and
must include the full title of the paper, and author listing (i.e. name(s),
affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address(es), telephone and fax
number(s)). All submissions will undergo a blind refereeing process, and a
selection of papers presented at the conference will be published in book
form after the conference.

Registration and Accommodation
All participants must register for the conference by 1 August 2001. The
registration fee for the conference is BND150.00 (or Singapore150.00) which
covers lunches, morning and afternoon tea, the Conference Dinner and the
conference proceedings.
Accommodation is available with costs ranging from BND15.00 for campus
hostel rooms (bed and breakfast), to BND50.00 for on-campus
3-star-hotel-standard Visiting Lecturers Quarters (5 twin, 5 single and 3
double rooms available with breakfast), and from BND50.00 for out-of-city
hotels to BND200.00 for city hotels. Further details will be sent out in
early June.
Universiti Brunei Darussalam regrets that no financial assistance can be
provided.

From the SNIPPETS Editorial Statement:
The aim of _Snippets_ is to publish specific remarks that
motivate research or that make theoretical points germane to
current work. The ideal contribution is the ideal footnote: a
side remark that taken on its own is not worth lengthy development
but that needs to be said.

We will publish notes that contribute to the study of _syntax and
semantics in generative grammar_. The notes are to be brief,
self-contained and explicit. They may do any of the following
things:
a. point out an empirical phenomenon that goes against accepted
generalizations or that shows that some aspect of a theory is
problematic;
b. point out unnoticed minimal pairs that fall outside the scope
of any existing theory;
c. point out an empirical phenomenon that confirms the
predictions of a theory in an area where the theory has not
been tested;
d. explicitly describe technical inconsistencies in a theory or
in a set of frequently adopted assumptions;
e. explicitly describe unnoticed assumptions that underlie a
theory or assumptions that a theory needs to be supplemented
with in order to make desired predictions;
f. propose an idea for a pilot experiment in language acquisition
or language processing that directly bears on theoretical
issues;
g. call attention to little-known or forgotten literature in
which issues of immediate relevance are discussed.

We will solicit submissions issue by issue. A new submission
deadline will be announced for each issue, and the submissions that
we receive we will consider only for that issue. The submissions
that we accept will be printed in the upcoming issue; none will be
scheduled for a later issue.
Submissions are to be a _maximum_ of 500 words (including examples),
with an additional half page allowed for diagrams, tables and
references. Given that we envision the submissions themselves as
footnotes, _the submissions may not contain footnotes of their own_.
The ideal submission is one paragraph; a submission of five lines is
perfectly acceptable. _We will not consider abstracts_.
