We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Dear Colleagues,
I am a Foreign Languages student at the University of Genoa
(Italy). I am preparing my graduation thesis in History of the English
Language : its title, which was agreed with my tutor Professor Ermanno
Barisone, is "The English Language in the documents of Ligurian
emigrants in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century".
The inquiry I am leading aims at the discovery and the following
historical-linguistic elaboration of the data relevant to written (and
oral, if possible) documents of Ligurians who left my region (the
environs of Genoa, Northwestern Italy) during the past two centuries.
The researches I am doing concern letters, diaries, post cards,
memories written by emigrants who moved to English-speaking countries
(mainly United Kingdom, United States, Australia) where a temporary or
definite stay brought about changes in linguistic attitudes. The
principal subject of my thesis, which wants to give an historical
picture of the Ligurian migratory movement as well, is represented by
phenomena of "linguistic interferences": English words, sentences,
expressions that appear in the writings (or in the spoken language) of
Ligurians who emigrated abroad.
At present most of my analysis is based on the papers preserved in the
Archive of Popular Writings of the Genoese History Department: it is a
collection of important documents of "minor history". I would like to
know if anyone know of any documents that can help me in widening my
inquiry and in making it complete. I would be grateful for any advice
that you think useful to my research and if you could indicate the
availability of material to be consulted.
Thank you for your kind
attention.
Best regards.

I am seeking native speakers of Italian who are willing to
give grammaticality judgements for one or two sentences. This will
take only a moment of your time. Please respond
directly to me at mcginnis at ucalgary.ca. Many thanks for
your assistance!
