SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

TABU-Day: one-day conference on general linguistics
22 June 2001
University of Groningen

  TABU-Day is an annual one-day conference on general linguistics,
organised by the University of Groningen. The conference languages are
Dutch and English. TABU-Day 2001 will be held on Friday, June 22, at the
following location

        Harmonie Building,
        Oude Kijk in 't Jatstraat 26,
        Groningen, The Netherlands

  This year's keynote lectures will be given by Prof. Keith Johnson,
Associate Professor of Linguistics at the Linguistics Department, Ohio
State University, and Prof. Henk Verkuyl, Professor of the Linguistics
Section of the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS. The title of Keith
Johnson's talk is "X-MOD: An exemplar-based model of speech perception
(and phonology?)", Henk Verkuyl will speak on "Tense from the
compositional point of view".

  Abstracts are invited, for presentations in all aspects of linguistics.
The presentations are 20 minutes in length followed by 5 minutes of
discussion. The abstract deadline is May 25, 2001. In principle, TABU-Day
accepts all submissions.
  Abstracts should not exceed 400 words and can be in either Dutch or
English. An abstract should contain the title of the paper, the author's
name, address, affiliation, e-mail address, and phone number, the abstract
text, and any requirements for special equipment. Authors should submit
abstracts via e-mail as a plain ASCII file. If e-mail submission is not
possible, please contact the organisers.

  Please send your abstracts to the following address: tanja at let.rug.nl.

  Information will be posted on our Web site
( http://www.let.rug.nl/tabu/2001 ) as it becomes available. A third e-mail
circular containing more information on the conference will be sent out in
June 2000 to all members of CLCG, COLIBRI and LOT. If you are not a member
of one of these but would like to receive the second e-mail, please let us
know.

Call for papers

Special issue of Asian Journal of English Language Teaching
Theme: Learning and Teaching English in the Chinese EFL Context

Asian Journal of English Language Teaching (AJELT) invites submissions for a
special theme issue to be published in 2002 focusing on "Learning and Teaching
English in the Chinese EFL Context."

Chinese EFL learners and their input-poor learning context can arguably
represent the core of Asia's EFL learning community and the Confucian culture
of learning. Recent decades have also witnessed a surprising number of highly
successful EFL learners and professionals being produced in China. However, it
is not an overstatement to say that the field of applied linguistics and
second language acquisition has been long on assumptions and short on empirical
evidence when it comes to the Chinese learner. This special issue thus
attempts to bring into perspective the Chinese learner, the Chinese EFL
context, and the EFL learning task through data-driven research. It is hoped
that a close scrutiny of this unique configuration of learner, task, and
context can contribute to the understanding of both EFL in the Chinese
context and second language acquisition in general.

Possible topics include but are not limited to the following:
· The Chinese learning culture or cross-cultural studies
· Motivation and other affective factors
· Learning styles and learning strategies
· Teaching of English: theories and practices
· Curriculum development
· Evaluation and testing
· Teacher training
· Computer assisted language learning (CALL)
Along with full-length articles and reports of ongoing projects, reviews of
books and/or multimedia materials that shed light on the Chinese EFL learner
are also invited.

Interested contributors should send an e-mail of intent with an abstract of
200 words by 31 August 2001 to the guest editor. In addition, please include
the following items in your email: title of the manuscript, author's
(or authors') name(s), the main author's full mailing address, institutional
affiliation, e-mail address, fax and phone numbers. Full submission
