1ST ONTOLOGICAL SEMANTICS WORKSHOP
Granada, Spain
May 31 - June 1 2001
http://www.ontosem.org/os1
The term 'ontological semantics' refers to the theoretical
and methodological apparatus of describing and manipulating
meaning, as realized in natural language texts, that relies
on a language-independent ontology, ontology-related lexica
(and onomastica), a fact DB consisting of instances of
ontological concepts, as well as remembered text meaning
representations. The original development of this approach
is due to Sergei Nirenburg and his co-authors. The major
R&D projects associated with this approach (past and
present) include KBMT-89, Pangloss, Mikrokosmos and CREST.
There are several working groups, both in the US and in
Europe, that are actively using, or have the intention to
use ontological semantics and related resources in their
work. This workshop aims to bring together for the first
time such community, and tackle, fundamentally, the
following tasks:
* Offer a refresher course on the basics of ontological
semantics, as well as catch up on the latest developments.
* Discuss theoretical, technical, and methodological issues
related to its many aspects.
* Plan both further research and dissemination activities
for this approach.
Topics
- ----
* Fundamentals of ontological semantics.
* The Mikrokosmos ontology: past, present, and future.
* Reusability of the Mikrokosmos ontology for NLP and NLP-
related applications.
* Linguistic aspects: compatibility and integration with
diverse descriptive frameworks.
* Engineering aspects: tools and methodologies for the
depolyment and sharing OS-related resources.
