English Literary and Linguistic Studies at Newcastle is a progressive,
research-led Department which is entering an exciting phase of
expansion. An Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) grant has just
been awarded within the department and we are presently looking to
fill the following post: a Post-Doctoral Research Associate for a term
of up to five years; commencing Oct 1, 2001.

Post-Doctoral Research Associate

The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will be expected to contribute to
a project on Nuuchahnulth Grammar funded by the AHRB.

The P-DRA will have doctoral-level training in Linguistics with
background in phonology, morphology, and/or syntax and a familiarity
with one or more languages of the Pacific North West, preferably
Wakashan, but alternatively Salish or Chimakuan. Some experience of
fieldwork on these languages would be desirable. The applicant should
be familiar with standard IT practices and preferably have some
knowledge of: (i) language processing software programmes; (ii)
software for large text corpora including parsing/tagging procedures
(e.g., Shoebox, CLAN, CONC. etc.); and (iii) basic HTML programming
skills.  Cross-over training in the specific software packages in use
by the research team will be provided.

The post is available from 1st October 2001 for up to five years and
the starting salary is on the scale BP 16775-18,731 (depending on
experience).
