Subject: Announcements of Linguistics in the News
Dear Subscribers,
We are pleased to announce that we are instituting a new topic for
LINGUIST issues at the suggestion of Advisory Panel member, Paul
Fallon. Effective immediately, the topic "Media", will carry notices
of language, linguistics, or linguists in the news or other media.
These announcements will alert you to "linguistic sightings" such as
newspaper and magazine articles, or television and radio shows that
linguists might find valuable. For example, Paul notes that National
Geographic put out a nice map "Voices of the World" (and quoted many
linguists in the article) in August 1999. Other announcements might
be something along the lines of these fictitious ones:
1. This week American Public Broadcasting Stations (PBS) will feature
a Nova episode on language history. Check local listings for exact
time and date.
2. The prescriptive/descriptive issue is the lead story of the
September issue of the Atlantic Monthly.
3. On page A14 of the 28 Sept. 2001 New York Times (Washington Post,
London Times, etc.) there is an article on language acquisition which
includes quotes from a number of professors and other experts.
Due to their time sensitive nature, these messages will be posted
immediately, as the purpose of these issues is to get the word out so
that those interested can buy the paper or magazine, set their VCRs,
or make announcements to their students. If you know of something
linguistic in the media that would be of interest to your colleagues,
please send a message with the relevant information to LINGUIST, just
as you would for any other topic. The new topic, Media, will appear
among your LINGUIST issues soon!
We would like to thank Paul Fallon for sending us this suggestion. We
think that this new topic will provide a useful and unique service to
the linguistic community. We hope you do, too.
As always, we welcome your comments, and thank you for your continued
support of LINGUIST.
Best regards,
LINGUIST
