Subject:  Obituary for Philip Peterson

Philip L. Peterson, Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University,
died on September 11, 2001. A good number of linguists have known him
over the years through his publications and his conference
presentations, especially those which touched upon topics of interest
to Linguistics.  Peterson's research areas were Philosophy of Language
(quantifiers; propositions; event theory; meaning and reference;
speech acts; semantics), Epistemology, Existentialism, and
Aesthetics. He was the author of: Intermediate Quantifiers: Logic,
Linguistics, and Aristotelian Semantics (Ashgate, 2000), Fact,
Proposition, Event (Kluwer, 1997), and Concepts and Language (Mouton,
1973).  He published more than fifty-five articles and gave over
sixty-five addresses in the U.S. and abroad on topics in epistemology,
logic, metaphysics, aesthetics, linguistics, and the philosophy of
language.  In 1991, Peterson was Visiting Professor at the Catholic
University of Louvain (Belgium).  In Spring 2000, he held the
Fulbright Chair in Philosophy of Language at the University of Venice.
