Associate Professor of Japanese Studies
Applications are invited for appointment as Associate Professor of
Japanese Studies. The successful applicant will be expected to promote
the Department of Japanese and Korean Studies, the School and the
discipline of Japanese Studies within the university and wider
community.
The Department of Japanese and Korean Studies at UNSW has one of the
largest and most highly respected Japanese programs in Australia with
a full-time staff of twelve teaching over 1500 students. It is
committed to a wider range of teaching and research areas, as well as
to a diversity of approaches to its disciplines. Its language teaching
program is widely regarded as very successful, with a unique structure
enabling students to learn at the most appropriate level and progress
rapidly. A program in Japanese Studies is being developed.
Essential criteria: a PhD or equivalent in an area of Japanese
linguistics or language education; native or near native speaker
competence in written and spoken Japanese and English; a record of
effective academic leadership; and excellent record of research and
publication; a strong record of attracting competitive research grant
funding; a record of excellent achievement in teaching, supervision,
and courseware development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; a
record of achievement in administration in tertiary institution or
equivalent; a record of successful interaction with the local Japanese
community, and diplomatic and government/business authorities in
Australia, Japan and other countries; experience in implementing
equity and diversity policies and programs.
Desirable criteria: experience in administering a large and diverse
program; some familiarity with Korean.
The salary range for Associate Professor is A$76,956 to A$84,780 per
year depending on qualifications and experience.

The position is full-time (continuing).
Members of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition
of employment for this position.
