We have a vacancy for a well qualified researcher to work on eastern
Indonesian (the region from Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara to Irian
Jaya/West Papua) and East Timorese linguistics.  You will have a PhD
or equivalent qualifications in linguistics, a good publications
record and field experience in the region.  With your colleagues you
will contribute to the Department's program of field research on the
Austronesian language family and to interdisciplinary studies of
language and society undertaken by members of the Division of Society
and Environment. Appointment:  Fixed term contract for 5 years.  The
position is available from 6 January 2002.

Remuneration:  Upon appointment you will have a salary package in the
range of Aus$60,056-$70,858pa.  (Salary packages include salary and
generous superannuation provisions.  In addition there are
opportunities for external earnings and some scope for negotiated
arrangements within University policy.)

1.PhD (or equivalent qualifications) in Linguistics ESSENTIAL
2.Excellent record of research in the linguistics of the eastern
Indonesian/East Timorese region, as demonstrated particularly through
publications and referees' assessments ESSENTIAL
3.Substantial field research experience in the eastern
Indonesian/EastTimorese region and availability to do fieldwork
during the term of the appointment ESSENTIAL
4.Competence in grammatical analysis ESSENTIAL
5.Some knowledge of cultural anthropology DESIRABLE
6.Capacity and willingness to supervise postgraduate students from a
variety of cultural backgrounds ESSENTIAL
7.Ability and willingness to contribute to the promotion of
excellence in research, professional activities and training in
Linguistics in the School, the University and externally. ESSENTIAL
8.Ability to use for field and archival research purposes one or more
Indonesian languages ESSENTIAL
9.Submission of a proposed program of research which is consistent
with departmental priorities and research interests, and capable of
being completed during the term of the Fellowship ESSENTIAL
10.Capacity and willingness to establish and maintain effective
relations with colleagues and staff within the School, the University
and externally, both nationally and internationally ESSENTIAL
11.Capacity and willingness to undertake administrative duties

refereeing of manuscripts submitted to the book series, Pacific
