16th Congress of the Canadian Association of translation Studies.
Dalhousie University, Canada,May 29-31, 2003
Guest Speaker: Anthony Pym, Spain
Themes:
1) Globalization, translation and the publishing industry: Which texts
are translated? Which are not? On what basis are translators selected?
What is the effect on translation of copyright laws?
2) Globalization and localization: How can localization be theorized
within translation studies? What distinguishes localization from
translation? Is there still a need for scientific texts to be
translated? What changes have hypermedia and multimedia meant for the
practice and theory of translation? Should training in localization
take place in the university or on the job?
3) Globalization, translation, hegemony and ethics: What is the effect
of globalization on the practice of translators, and on the ways
translations are received? How has the creation of transnational
entities changed the conditions for legal translation and for
interpretation?
4) Globalization, translation, hegemony and cultural hybridity: Does
globalization necessarily mean assimilation and acculturation? Is
translation becoming less necessary? How is the practice of
translation changing in bilingual societies? What is the connection
between globalization and post-colonialism in relation to translation?
Deadline for proposals (300 words or more): September 20th 2002.
