The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

California, San Diego has a job opening for a tenure-track position in
the linguistics of heritage languages. The term "heritage language"
denotes a language other than English that is associated with an
individual's ethnic or cultural background and a "heritage speaker" is
someone who speaks or understands a language (other than English) that
was spoken at home. This position is part of a new interdisciplinary
initiative in the Social Sciences and Humanities addressing
linguistic, ethnic, and cultural diversity in California (the
California Cultures in Comparative Perspective Initiative,

Qualifications: The successful applicant should have a strong
background in linguistic theory and a research focus on one or more of
the heritage languages of California (including Arabic, Cambodian,
Cantonese/Mandarin, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, Native American languages
of California, Persian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and
others); native fluency in any of these languages is not required.

The applicant's overall research program should interface with the
main emphasis of the department on combining current theoretical
research in linguistics with experimental research in areas such as
computational linguistics, language and brain, phonetics, language
variation, and first or second language acquisition. (For more
information, please visit http://ling.ucsd.edu/.)

As part of their service to the department, the successful applicant
will be expected to develop and help direct a program in the teaching
of heritage languages, under the auspices of the department's
Linguistics Language Program (http://ling.ucsd.edu/Language/llp.htm).
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in linguistics at the time of
appointment.

Please indicate in the letter whether or not you will be available for
an interview at the 2003 LSA Meeting in Atlanta.

Those candidates who applied for the position in 2001 and wish to
reactivate their file can send an updated CV and letter of application
to the above address.

All candidates should arrange for three (3) referees to send letters
of reference under separate cover to the same address, and should
include the names and addresses of the referees (including e-mail
