MODERN WESTERN ARMENIAN:
PERSPECTIVES AND PROSPECTS

!!!! Extended deadline for submission of abstracts: 1 March, 2002

The Armenian Studies Program and the Department of Linguistics at the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the Department of Linguistics
at Harvard University, are pleased to announce the first annual
conference on 'Modern Western Armenian: Perspectives and Prospects,'
to be held in Ann Arbor, on 12-13 April, 2002. The Program Committee
for the initiative consists of Bert Vaux, Michele Sigler, Marie
Nilsenova and Kevork Bardakjian.

Scholars and interested individuals have long been keenly aware of the
need for serious and systematic studies of Modern Western Armenian as
one of the two literary standards and as a key to modern Armenian
tradition. This annual gathering is being launched with a view to
promoting research into all phases of Modern Western Armenian language
and linguistics. While format and content will certainly vary,
emphasis will be placed on general linguistic and comparative
approaches.

Scholars and students of Modern Western Armenian and of linguistics
are cordially invited to participate in the conference. For this first
gathering we will have two ninety-minute invited talks by Joan Bresnan
(Stanford University) and Sarah G. Thomason (University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor), and approximately twelve papers for shorter presentations.
Prospective participants should submit a one-page abstract as soon as
possible but no later than 1 March, 2002. The abstract should clearly
indicate the name and institutional affiliation of the participant,
title of the talk, document format (if sent as an attachment) and
fonts used, and should be forwarded by electronic mail to Denise
Brennan at: denisebr at umich.edu. Selected participants will be notified
by 4 March, 2002.  A limited number of grants to cover travel and
lodging are available for those participants whose papers are accepted
for presentation, but who are unable to procure support from their
home institutions or other sources.

Computing (WFSC). ISDA 2002 is the Second International workshop that
brings together international soft computing / artificial intelligence
researchers, developers, practitioners, and users. The aim of ISDA
2002 is to serve as a forum to present current and future work as well
as to exchange research ideas in this field.

ISDA 2002 invites authors to submit their original and unpublished
work that demonstrate current research in all areas of soft computing
and computational intelligence including design of artificial neural
networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary algorithms, hybrid systems,
agents, and their applications in science, technology, business and
commercial.
