We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

I am developing an undergraduate honors course,'language and power.'
I am in need of suggestions for required and suggested texts, and
would appreciate seeing course outlines that anyone has. Also,
information on films/movies that I might use in the course would be
helpful. The students taking the class will not be linguistics majors;
they will be from the general college population. I will compile the
information received and post it for others who may be interested.

Subject: Problems in multilingual online text projects
I am assembling information from those working with online
multilingual text projects, including foreign language instruction
projects currently under development.
Questions:
1. What encoding are you using?
2a. If you use Unicode (/ISO 10646), have you had any problems (i.e.,
with fonts, browsers, operating systems, the Unicode characters
available, etc.)?
b. If you need characters that are *not* yet in Unicode, how do you
handle these?
c. How do you specify variants (if this is applicable to your
project)?
If there is adequate response, I will post a summary to this list.
With many thanks,
Deborah Anderson
