We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Can anyone tell me when, how and why the term 'voice' was first used
for the active and passive (and other) forms of the verb? Diathesis
is in Dionysios Thrax. Donatus used genera.

Thanks,

Steve Collins

I am trying to find lists of reconstructions of proto-forms in
Amerindian language families, either printed or on the web. I think I
have Uto-Aztecan and Mixe Zoque under control but suggestions for
others would be highly welcome. I am particularly interested in cases
where reconstructions suggest agriculture or its absence. Thanks
