Second Call for Papers

As part of the Annual Meeting of the German Linguistic Society
(Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Sprachwissenschaft), to be held in Munich,
Germany, 26-28.02.2003, there will be a two-day workshop
(27.-28.03.2003) on the following topic:

"The (non)distinction of the syntax and semantics of adjectives and
adverbs"

Since adjectives and adverbs are diachronically and categorially as
well as synchronically and morphologically related, these two
categories are often conceived of as one conflating category the
members of which are often hard to distinguish on the basis of formal
criteria. Both the structural parallels that exist between adjectival
and adverbial projections and the functional and semantic parallels
these elements display (in the context of nouns and verbs) are also
closely related to the categorial non-distinction of adjectives and
adverbs.  However, this characterization does not hold true for all
adjectives and adverbs. A case in point applies to adjectives and
adverbs that display syntactic, functional and semantic similarities
with elements of other syntactic categories such as determiners,
numerals and quantifiers in the case of adjectives and such as
prepositions, particles and degree words in the case of adverbs.
Contributions taking a theoretical and / or empirical perspective one
(or more) of the following topics are invited:

-   (non)distinction and lexical representation of adjectives and adverbs
-   morphological aspects of adjectives and adverbs
-   adjectives and adverbs in word formation processes
-   the structure of adjectival and adverbial projections
-   functional categories within and complexity of adjectival and adverbial
	projections
-   synchronic and diachronic development of adjectives and adverbs
-   universality of adjectives and adverbs
-   prosodic restrictions on adjective and adverb placement
-   pragmatic restrictions on adjective and adverb placement

Papers should not exceed 20 minutes ( + 10 minutes for discussion).

Subject:  Old Turkic symposium

Dear colleagues,

I would like to invite you to participate in a symposium organized in
the framework of the VATEC-project ("Vorislamische Alttuerkische
Texte: Elektronisches Corpus") devoted to the creation of an
electronic database for the language material in Pre-Islamic Old
Turkic manuscripts. The project, financed by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft, was initiated and is led by Marcel Erdal and
Jost Gippert in Frankfurt, by Klaus Roehrborn in Goettingen and by
Peter Zieme at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences; Jakob
Taube, Zekine Oezertural, Irina Nevskaya, Michael Knueppel and Ralf
Gehrke have worked at it. The VATEC project complements the project of
digitalization of Uygur manuscripts stored at the Turfan Collection of
the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy.

The database created contains editions of a sample of Old Turkic texts
in the Uighur, Manichaean, runiform, Sogdian and Syriac scripts. The
text edition figures transliteration, rough transcription (with
conjectures for damaged stretches and the like), normalized
transcription (which was the basis for further morphological
analysis), morphological parsing and glossing, and translation into
German or English. All the texts are presented in the Shoebox,
Word-Cruncher and HTML formats providing various information retrieval
opportunities (concordances, word lists, sorting, filtering,
etc.). The results of the pilot stage of the project (06.1999-03.2001)
are already accesible on the Internet
(vatec2.fkidg1.uni-frankfurt.de).

The project is now drawing close to its completion in its present
form; the symposium will deal with the presentation of results, with
linguistic, philological and technical problems encountered and with
the solutions proposed to these problems, with issues raised during
the project and with the outlook for future cooperation in this
field. The project work has had to meet the challenge of numerous
unsolved issues of Old Turkic phonology, morphology, syntax and the
lexicon. The solutions we have found will be of special interest for
experts invited to participate, and for the broader Turcological
public. On the other hand, we hope that you personally and other
participants of the symposium could present lectures on various Old
Turkic "burning points" which could help us avoid misinterpretations
and improve our approach.

The symposium is to take place on the 20-21 of September, 2002, at the
Institute of Turcology of the J.W. Goethe University at Frankfurt a.M.
Please inform us concerning your participation and the topic of your
lecture in case you plan to present any by the 30th of July.
