The linguistic journal Islenskt mal
Volume 23 of the journal Islenskt mal og almenn malfraedi (Icelandic
and General Linguistics) has just appeared. Islenskt mal is a
linguistic journal that is published once a year by The Icelandic
Linguistic Association. As its name implies, it publishes papers on
Icelandic and general linguistics and it also publishes reviews and
book notices. Most of the papers published deal with the Icelandic
language in one way or another or draw on data from Icelandic. The
current editor is Hoskuldur Thrainsson, professor of Icelandic
linguistics at the University of Iceland.
In the volumes published so far one can find papers on aphasiology,
comparative linguistics, derivational morphology, dialectoloy,
discourse analysis, historical linguistics, history of linguistics,
inflectional morphology, international languages, language
acquisition, language technology, lexicography, lexicology, metrics,
onomastics, phonetics, phonology, psycholinguistics, semantics,
sociolinguistics, speech pathology, syntax and the teaching of
Icelandic, i.e. virtually all aspects of linguistics. The majority of
the papers is written in Icelandic and these contain a summary in
English, but the journal also publishes papers in other Nordic
languages, English and German (with a summary in Icelandic, sometimes
also in English).
As already mentioned, most of these papers draw on Icelandic data or
concern Icelandic in one way or another. Islenskt mal is thus the only
journal in the world that is devoted to the scientific study of
Icelandic. In addition, the journal carries papers on the teaching of
Icelandic and reviews and book notices covering dictionaries,
handbooks, textbooks and dissertations concerning Icelandic. Access to
this journal is hence a must for anyone studying or working on
Icelandic and linguists are strongly encouraged to suggest this
excellent journal to their libraries!
The regular subscription price is USD 49 for libraries and USD 39 for
individuals (+ shipping). Back issues are also available. In addition,
a package containing volumes 1-23 is available to new subscribers
(including libraries) for USD 198 (+ shipping) for a limited time
(contact The Linguistic Institute, University of Iceland, IS-101
Reykjavik, ICELAND; e-mail: malvis at hi.is ).
