On 20 June the Slovenian daily newspaper "Delo" announced the death of
the Slovenian linguist Franc Jakopin. I have translated the article
below.
- Donald F. Reindl
"Dr. Franc Jakopin, a member of the Academy and linguist,
Slavist, lexicographer and one of the most visible of Slovenian
onomasticians, died on Tuesday [18 June, 2002]. He was born 29
September 1921 in Dramlje pri Celje, and received his degree in Slavic
studies at the University of Ljubljana in 1949. He continued his
education at a number of universities abroad, particularly in the
Soviet Union. He received his Ph.D. in 1978 with a dissertation on
Slovenian anthroponymy. He taught as a professor of Russian,
Belarusian and Ukrainian at the University of Ljubljana for many
years, and became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU)
in 1989.
"Jakopin's field of activities was wide and varied; among
other things, he was a member of the preparatory committee, and for
some years president, of the Seminar for the Slovenian Language,
director of the Fran Ramovs Institute for the Slovenian Language ZRC
SAZU, a member and for some time president of the chief editorial
committee for the unabridged Slovenian academy dictionary [the SSKJ]
and of the commission for the Slovenian normative orthographic
dictionary ["pravopis"], a co-editor and editor of the journals "Jezik
in slovstvo" ["Language and Literature"] and "Slavisticna revija"
["The Slavic Review"], linguistics editor for the Encyclopedia of
Slovenia and author of articles for it, an author of textbooks and
popular handbooks (among others, a Russian-Slovenian dictionary for
schools, a grammar of the Russian literary language, and
Slovenian-language textbooks for Slovenes abroad). Franc Jakopin was
our most prominent specialist in Russian and East Slavic linguisti!
cs, but he also took an interest in Slovenian linguistic matters,
which he addressed from a broad linguistic perspective."
