Second Announcement

International Conference on Language, Linguistics & The Real World
Kuala Lumpur: 16- 18 October 2002

Language is both in the mind of the individual and in the life of
society.  The study of language has tended to concentrate on the
specification of the abstract linguistic code and only recently has
begun to give greater attention to the description and explanation of
the use of the code as a means of interpersonal communication.  The
latter orientation draws linguistics into direct contact with the real
world, for example, that of commerce, politics, social services and
the law, by looking at the way individuals communicate within and
between these systems in a multilingual and international setting.
This conference will examine the complexities of language and the need
for greater language awareness in dealing with practical issues and
present realities.

Objectives
· To bring together participants from diverse occupations and
backgrounds to explore the nature of language;
· For the linguists to discover more about the place of communication
in its social context;
· To seek a consensus on the role linguists and language practitioners
can play in developing efficient and effective communication in the
workplace and in society as a whole.

Areas for discussion
· Language and culture in organizations and commercial enterprises.
· Ethnographic studies of language use in communities, including
marginalized societies.
· Ethnographic studies of language use in communities, including
marginalized societies.
· Description and discussion of research results related to language
in use, including cross-cultural communication, discourse.
· Translation and interpreting.
· Speech and language disorders.
· Language and law, forensic linguistics, legal drafting, court
interpreting.
· New trends and innovations in language learning/teaching.
· Language-related developments in Information and Communication
Technology.

Who should participate
Those who are in any profession in which language and communication is
crucial:
· Corporate managers, executives, human resource and public relations
personnel.
· Language practitioners, linguists, educators, communication skills
trainers, researchers.
· Translators, interpreters.
· Speech Therapists, counselors, almoners.
· Army personnel, air and sea navigators.
· Diplomatic Corp personnel.

Instruction to paper presenters
Please send the abstract of your paper and your bio-data in either
English or Malay to the Secretariat before 31st May 2002.  The
abstract should be between 100 to 150 words.  It can be sent by e-mail
(as a file attachment) or by mail on a floppy disk.  Please name the
file according to author, e.g. Smith.doc and begin with the following
information: · Author’s name (only on the front cover) ·
Affiliation · Title of paper · Country · Full address including phone
number and fax · E-mail address

· Text font : Times New Roman 12 pt
· Title     : Times New Roman 14 pt
· Margins   : 2.5 cm (1 inch)
· Single spacing
· Please use a Word package compatible with Windows 95 onward

CALL FOR PAPERS
Linguistic Purism in the Germanic Languages
University of Bristol, UK
9-11 April 2003

Studies on linguistic purism commonly concentrate on one particular
aspect of the field, be it a specific language, region or type of
purism. Little research has attempted to provide a more unified
account of purism, combining description of the phenomena with an
explanation of why purism comes / came about.  In this conference we
want to bring together scholars from a broad range of areas in order
to initiate a dialogue between different aspects, fields and
theoretical models. The aim is to provide a platform where a wide
range of accounts of and approaches to puristic ideas can be discussed
in order to detect common patterns across languages, periods, regions
and types.

Papers (25-30 minutes) are invited on any of the following fields:
Folk Linguistics
Attitudes towards and perceptions of dialects and minority languages
Standardization of Germanic languages
Stigmatization of non-standard varieties
History of puristic ideas
Modern purism by institutions or individuals
