Subject:  Tenure Requirements for Linguists in Foreign Lang Depts.



I work in a department, which is current revising the tenure
and promotion requirements for faculty members.  The majority
of faculty works in literature and cultural studies with two
linguists.  The current proposal sets guidelines applicable to
all faculty, but there has been some discussion about differing
requirements for professors working in literary studies and
linguistics.  I am writing to find out if other linguists in Foreign
Language departments follow the same guidelines as their
colleagues in literature or if there are differences in the
requirements that reflect the nature of the respective fields of
specialization.  I will post a summary depending on the responses
to this query.

Subject:  pretonic syncope in English

Dear Linguists,

I'm looking for information on pretonic schwa-zero alternation in
English, e.g. police~p'lice, potato~p'tato etc. I'm particularly
interested in whether there are any constraints on its application,
e.g. in the quality of the flanking consonants. I haven't found any
detailed literature on this topic, so I would also be grateful for
