ANNOUNCEMENT OF COURSES IN FORENSIC LINGUISTICS -
CARDIFF UNIVERSITY, UK


Forensic Linguistics is the study of language in
the legal and judicial system. Forensic linguists
work in three main areas:


The investigation of language crimes  (eg
fabricated confessions, threat letters, suicide
notes, speaker identification, plagiarised texts)

The linguistic description of forensic genres
(eg courtroom trials, police interviews, hostage
negotiations, emergency calls)

The reform of legal language  (eg police caution,
jury instructions, warning labels)


We offer a number of opportunities for studying
Forensic Linguistics:


International Summer School in Forensic
Linguistic Analysis - 6 days, intensive (this
year to be held in Birmingham 15th ~ 20th
September 2002)

MA in Forensic Linguistics (subject to
validation) - 1 year, full-time

MA in Language and Communication Research,
specialising in Forensic Linguistics - 1 year,
full-time

Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Linguistics - 9
months, full-time

Postgraduate Certificate in Forensic Linguistics
- 3 months, full-time



Studentships or bursaries are sometimes available
for the MA in Language and Communication Research
and are available annually for the Summer School.
