It is with great sadness that I inform members of LinguistList that Henrik
Birnbaum, Professor Emeritus of Slavic Languages and Literatures at UCLA,
passed away April 29 from complications following a protracted illness.
A true Slavist of immense erudition, he will be warmly remembered by
colleagues, students, and friends around the world for his boundless
energy, his generous support of Slavic studies in Eastern Europe, and his
leadership at UCLA in the Slavic Department and the Center for Russian and
East European Studies.
He is survived by his wife Marianna and two children, Eva and Staffan. The
funeral will be held at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park in Los Angeles on May 5
(Sunday) at 1:00p.
