Abstract:
CROSSING BARRIERS & BRIDGING CULTURES
Edited by Arturo Tosi (Royal Holloway, University of London)
This collection of papers offers a unique insight into the world's
largest translation service from the point of view of the translators
themselves. No longer invisible, professional translators here voice
their own views on their experience of working life in a multilingual
community and on the endless challenge of safeguarding this
multilingualism. I hope this book will remind scholars of the
centrality of this kind of translation in today's world: it also
demonstrates what we can learn from listening to the professionals
themselves. Andrew Chesterman, University of Helsinki.
DESCRIPTION
This book assumes particular significance today in that
for the first time translators from different linguistic backgrounds
discuss multilingual translation in the European Union. All articles
in this book stress the political dimension of multilingualism, an! d
the professional role of the translator as communicator, on which much
of the credibility of a Union speaking with one voice in many
languages will ultimately depend.
