Since the posting 13.1227 call for papers for the Language, Brain and
Computation Conference to be held in Venice (October 3-5, 2002) was
slightly misleading, please note that abstracts are welcome in
theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistics, and are not limited to
natural language processing. The deadline for abstract submissions is

Call for Papers

26th Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association Conference (APLA 26)

Memorial University
St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada

November 8-10, 2002

Conference theme: Linguistic Approaches to Literacy

Literacy is an issue with enormous social repercussions.  Within an
interdisciplinary context, the goal of this conference is to highlight
the roles that linguistically-grounded approaches can play in helping
solve literacy-related problems.  The conference will focus on two
specific subthemes:

the role of literacy in minority and endangered language contexts
linguistic and cognitive underpinnings of normal and disordered
literacy development

Invited speakers represent specialists both in the acquisition of
literacy skills and in literacies in cross-cultural (particularly
aboriginal) perspective.  They include:

			Julie Brittain (MIT)
			Barbara Burnaby (Memorial University)
			Alana Johns (University of Toronto)
			Raymond Klein (Dalhousie University)
			Roberta Treiman (Wayne State University)

The House lecture, scheduled for the evening preceding the conference,
will be delivered by Patrick Shannon of Pennsylvania State University,
known for his work on the politics of literacy.

We welcome proposals, in English or French, for papers relating to the
conference theme.  Papers in other areas of linguistics are also
welcome, particularly those with a focus on Eastern North America.
Graduate students are especially encouraged to submit.  Papers are of
30 minutes duration (allow 20 minutes for presentation and 10 for
discussion).

Abstracts should be no more than 400 words in length, excluding title
and references.  In a separate section, please list your paper title,
name, affiliation (indicate if you are a student), your current
mailing and electronic address, your phone and fax numbers, and any
audiovisual equipment that will be needed for your presentation.
Abstracts submitted via email should be sent as separate attachments
(WordPerfect, MSWord, or Rich Text Format).
