Meeting Description:

STL03 is a small international conference for the discussion of speech
technology's role in the advancement of linguistic knowledge and, vice
versa, linguistics' role in the advancement of speech technology. The
Speech Technology for Linguistics/Linguistics for Speech Technology
conference will take place on the weekend of May 17-18, 2003 at the
University of Joensuu. Current speech technology applications
development often involves both speech engineering specialists and
researchers from traditionally more humanitiesoriented backgrounds
like phonetics and linguistics. The Department of Linguistics and
Language Technology at the University of Joensuu/Finland wants to
invite researchers from or interested in the area of speech technology
to a weekend of talks and discussions about the interaction of speech
technology and linguistics. Our central question will be twofold:
-What is the role of speech technology in the advancement of linguistic
  knowledge and theory?
-And what is the role of linguistics in the advancement of speech technology?

At a time when several nationally funded interdisciplinary research
projects in Finland approach their completion, a debate of these
questions seems all the more justified and interesting. To inspire
discussions, the following keynote speakers have been invited: Inger
Moen (Oslo), Eric Keller (Lausanne) and John Local (York).

The number of participants will be limited to 50 in order to allow for
all plenary interactive sessions. A call for thought- and
discussionprovoking short plenary papers will be published on
December 1. On the same day, the conference website with information
about registration, paper submission, the scientific committee
etc. will be opened at the URL http://phon.joensuu.fi/stl03/.

Speech Technology for Linguistics/Linguistics for Speech Technologies
is an international satellite event of the 30th Meeting of Finnish
Linguists, to be held on May 15--16 at the University of Joensuu. The
conference language will be English.

Welcome to Joensuu!

On behalf of the Organising Committee
Stefan Werner
