IREX [International Research & Exchanges Board] is pleased to announce
the 2003-2004 grant opportunities for US scholars. For more

IREX supports the following programs:

INDIVIDUAL ADVANCED RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (IARO)

Deadline: November 1, 2002 Grants of up to $40,000 for two to nine
months to US scholars for research in the social sciences and
humanities in Europe and Eurasia. Applicants can choose from
Fellowships in Policy Research and Development or Fellowships in the
Humanities. Limited funding is available for cross-regional research
in Mongolia, Iran, and Turkey for humanities scholars. Grants of one
to three months are available to master's students for research on
policy-relevant theses or equivalent projects.

CENTRAL ASIA AND ITS NEIGHBORS REGIONAL POLICY SYMPOSIUM

Deadline: December 1, 2002 IREX, in collaboration with the Woodrow
Wilson Center for International Scholars, will hold a symposium for
senior and junior US scholars to discuss a variety of political,
economic, historical, and cultural topics related to Central Asia
and surrounding countries. Junior scholars will be chosen based on a
national competition. Applications must demonstrate a commitment to
continued study, research, and work on and with the countries of the
Central Asian region. The symposium is scheduled for Spring 2003 in
the Washington, DC area.

SHORT-TERM TRAVEL GRANTS PROGRAM (STG)

Deadline: February 1, 2003 Grants of up to $3,000 for up to two months
of independent or collaborative research in Europe and Eurasia for
postdoctoral scholars and professionals with terminal
degrees. Successful projects must make a substantive contribution to
knowledge of the contemporary political, economic, historical, or
cultural developments in the region and must demonstrate how such
knowledge is relevant to US foreign policy.

JOHN J. AND NANCY LEE ROBERTS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Deadline: March 15, 2003 A single grant of up to $50,000 for research
projects lasting up to 18 months. This year applications will be
accepted for research only in the field of education. This program
supports research in and on Europe, Eurasia, the Near East, and Asia
for scholars with PhD or equivalent terminal degrees. Collaborative
research programs involving international colleagues are strongly
encouraged.

STARR COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAM

Deadline: May 1, 2003 Grants of up to $20,000 to a cross-border team
of graduate and/or postgraduate scholars for one year. This year
applications will be accepted for research only on the topics of media
and the Internet. The program supports research in and on Eurasia, the
Near East, and Asia. The collaborative team must consist of at least
one US citizen or permanent resident and at least two citizens and
current residents of two different countries of the eligible regions
at the time of application.

CALL FOR CONSULTANTS

Deadline: Open IREX seeks qualified American experts to serve as peer
review selection committee members for its programs. The consultants
will take part in the selection process by reading, scoring, and
ranking applications submitted by US and international citizens as
well as possibly interviewing candidates for participation in these
programs. IREX will provide a small honorarium to selected
consultants.
