2003 INTERNATIONAL
LEXICAL FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR CONFERENCE

The 8th International Lexical Functional Grammar Conference will be
held by the Department of Anthropology, University at Albany, SUNY in
Saratoga Springs, NY from 16 to 18 July 2003. A pre-conference
gathering and, possibly, a tutorial are planned for 15 July.

SUBMISSIONS: TALKS AND POSTERS
The main conference sessions will involve 40-minute talks (30 min. +
10 min. discussion period), and poster/system presentations.
Contributions should focus on results from completed as well as
ongoing research, with an emphasis on novel approaches, methods,
ideas, and perspectives, whether descriptive, theoretical, formal or
computational. Presentations should describe original, unpublished
work.
DISSERTATION SESSION
Like in the previous year, we are hoping to hold a special session
that will give students the chance to present recent PhD dissertations
(or other student research dissertations). The dissertations must be
completed by the time of the conference; the 30-minute talks in this
session should provide an overview of the contents of the
dissertation.
WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS
We also invite proposals for workshops and/or tutorials. They should
be sent to the local organizers at: g.broadwell at albany.edu

LOCATION
Saratoga Springs is a resort town in upstate New York, famous for its
mineral waters, spas, and horse racing. It has maintained and
restored a beautiful, pedestrian-oriented downtown full of 19th
century architecture. During the summer Saratoga Springs is also home
to the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York City Ballet. LFG 2003
sessions will be held at Empire State College, SUNY, located in
downtown Saratoga Springs.
Saratoga Springs is thirty miles north of Albany, NY, which is also
the location of the nearest airport. Saratoga Springs is also
serviced by Amtrak, Greyhound, and Trailways. The Adirondack
Mountains begin about fifteen miles north of Saratoga Springs, at Lake
George.

Call for Papers
The Special Track on "Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing"
invites researchers from academia, government, and industry to submit
papers reporting on recent advances in all aspects of Natural Language
Processing, including but not limited to:
- pragmatics, discourse, semantics, syntax, and the lexicon;
- phonetics, phonology, and morphology;
- text understanding and generation;
- language-oriented information retrieval, question answering,
summarization and information extraction;
- language-oriented machine learning;
- multi-lingual processing, machine translation;
- natural language interfaces and dialogue systems;
- electronic dictionaries;
- knowledge acquisition;
- text mining;
- message and narrative understanding systems;
- tools and resources;
- evaluation of systems
The conference also encourages submission of papers on applications
of natural language processing in areas such as, biomedicine, finance,
etc. We especially welcome any contribution to the area of language
processing showing important developments in information technology.
Submission Guidelines
Authors must submit an electronic copy (ps or pdf) of their complete
manuscript to the contact chair by October 25, 2002. All submissions
must be original, previously unpublished work, and they should not
exceed 10 double spaced pages. Also, the papers should not identify
the author(s) (for details see FLAIRS-03 Paper Submissions at
http://www.cs.uwp.edu/flairssubsys/index.php3) and be accompanied by a
cover letter that indicates the contact authors, paper's title, and
appropriate subject areas under which the paper can be classified.
Notification of acceptance will be emailed around January 7, 2003.
Authors of accepted papers will be expected to submit the final
camera-ready copy of their full papers by February 17, 2003.
Journal Publication
The Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal on Artificial
Intelligence Tools (IJAIT) will have a special issue of the journal
devoted to FLAIRS-03. After the conference, authors of selected papers
will be invited to submit revised versions of their papers for journal
publication.
