Subject:  Unsupervised machine learning (pinyin->characters)

I was wondering if there has ever been any work done in unsupervised
machine learning for converting chinese pinyin to chinese characters?
Perhaps taking a large corpus of a text in its pinyin form and
comparing it to the same text in its character form and having the
program learn to select the correct chinese character from the pinyin
input in this manner?
