Dear Linguists,
As the world of science expands, the most efficient way linguists can
disseminate their research to the community is through writing and
publishing papers. We at LINGUIST List would like to do what we can to
facilitate this exchange of ideas, and that is why we have developed
the Academic Papers Area. Here you can submit your paper abstract,
which will be classified, like everything else on our website,
according to linguistic sub-field and subject language. It will also
be cross-referenced with other parts of the site, such as People and
Organizations. You can also update your abstract, if necessary,
through a password-protected update form. The Academic Papers Area is
available at
http://linguistlist.org/pubs/papers
At the moment there are 103 paper abstracts in our database and this
number is constantly growing. The browse and search facilities make it
easy to find papers on a particular subject or in a particular field:
you can search our collection of abstracts by keyword, author,
linguistic sub-field or subject language; so now you can quickly find
papers relevant to your research!
However, in order for LINGUIST List to continue this and other
services, which we provide completely free of charge to the linguistic
community, we have to ask you for support. This year we need $50,000
to fund our student editors and programmers who work really hard to
make sure that LINGUIST runs smoothly. And don't forget that in return
for donating to LINGUIST you can receive one of those fantastic gifts,
like T-shirts, tote bags, or a cooking apron, that will get you
noticed everywhere!
Thank you for your support.

Subject: How Your Donations Help Us - Spotlight Karolina Owczarzak
Dear Linguists,
This is my second and last year on the LINGUIST List. When I came here
two years ago, I didn't know how fascinating my work on LINGUIST would
turn out to be! Despite minimal previous experience with computers and
the Internet (which comprised emailing friends and playing games from
my younger brother's collection), I was soon posting Jobs issues, then
Dissertation Abstracts, then also Conferences and Calls, and
programming dynamic Web pages. Now my experience includes ColdFusion,
HTML, SQL, Oracle 8i and some JavaScript. And I'm even trusted with
the responsibility to teach new editors how to program!
Working with LINGUIST really is a very satisfying and challenging
experience. Satisfying in that you always somehow manage to do even
the most impossible tasks of the type "Go and find out about audio
digitization, we need an expert for tomorrow", which Helen heaps on
you with her charming smile and gentle emphasis that "It's fun to
learn new things!". Challenging in that you always try to find
solution to a problem at hand by yourself (if it takes you more than
three days, you ask Anthony, and if he replies "Oh, it's very easy"
and walks away, you know that the problem is impossible to solve by
definition, which means you go and consult Gayathri who will solve it
in ten to fifteen minutes, tea break included).
But I love the challenges and I agree wholeheartedly with Helen: it is
fun to learn new things! Especially when the new things turn out to be
things that you've always wanted to do, only didn't even know about
it. If it wasn't for all these tasks (thank you, Helen!) and
challenges (thank you, Anthony!), I wouldn't be here with the prospect
of doctoral studies in computational linguistics next year and the
hope of developing some ground-breaking applications in a more distant
future...
You've probably noticed that all the personal letters from LINGUIST
editors sound like a series of success stories in a weight-loss
program commercial; but in contrast to such, our stories don't have
"Results not typical" and "Actor portrayal" in small print at the
bottom of the screen (although they might have warnings like "Side
effects include: mild addiction to programming, dry mouth from the air
conditioning in the office, and high blood sugar from all the
donuts"). But seriously, we have lots to be grateful for: new skills,
new possibilities, new careers... All these opportunities that the
LINGUIST List provides to its student editors are, however, dependent
on you, our donors. Without your support LINGUIST wouldn't be able to
function. Please consider making a small donation, it will make a
world of a difference to us.

Subject: How to Donate and The LINGUIST List Hall of Fame
This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew
for your support.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
HOW TO DONATE
You can make a contribution by selecting one of three convenient
payment methods: secure credit card form, check, or wire transfer.
