Dear Subscribers,
As LINGUIST has evolved through the years, the number of issue topics
(Calls, Books, Jobs, etc.) has increased from five to an astounding
fifteen! One of the original five--arguably the cornerstone of the
original 5 was the Discussion topic. In the first issue of LINGUIST,
posted in December of 1990, the goal of the list is stated: "to
provide a forum for the discussion of those issues which interest
professional linguists."
While the scope of LINGUIST has grown considerably, the Discussion
issues continue to provide a forum for linguists to debate a wide
range of issues. In the past year, you have discussed the theoretical:
"Falsifiability vs. Usefulness"; the practical: "Accuracy in Speech
Recognition: Priorities"; and the ethical: "Linguists and
Advertising". The Discussion issues also provide the forum for
comments and debates about book reviews that have appeared on
LINGUIST.
While the topics are sometimes 'hot', and the rhetoric occasionally
'hotter', we work together to maintain a civil and professional
tone. The Discussion topic provides the opportunity and the forum for
frank talk about the topics that interest you; LINGUIST makes that
possible. Support LINGUIST and keep the conversation flowing!
Best regards,
Karen Milligan
Editor in Chief

Letter from the Editor in Chief
Evidence for a Critical Period
Dear Linguist Subscribers,
I tried to get out of writing this on the grounds that after reading
my letters for the past 4 years, you probably have all the information
about me that you'll ever need--and then some! But Helen wasn't buying
it; she suggested that I write from the viewpoint of LINGUIST Editor
in Chief (which I just found out means 'person-who-won't-go-away').
When Helen and Anthony hired me to work on LINGUIST five years ago,
they quickly realized that I wasn't going to be any use whatsoever on
the technological end. Oh sure, you've read the other editors' letters
where they say, "When I first came to LINGUIST I didn't know anything
about computers and now I'm fluent in javascript, java, Unix, Perl,
and ColdFusion." Well, that's because they're YOUNG; their brains are
still plastic! I, on the other hand, am well past the critical period
for (computer) language acquisition. When Anthony first told me we
were running a UNIX system, I thought he said (and I'm not making this
up) a Eunuch's system! So they put me in charge of the Posting and
'Public Interface' end.
That means that I read every piece of mail that LINGUIST receives, and
deal with it in one of several ways:
1. File it for posting by one of our awesome editors.
2. Turn it over to the appropriate crewmember.
(Richard-Publications; Sarah-Jobs; Marisa-Forgotten
Passwords; Gayathri-All Things Technical)
3. Handle it myself--
'No, LINGUIST won't provide the answers to your exam.'
'Yes, I'd be happy to try to find that book for you.'
'Yes, we did receive your message; it was posted 2 days ago.'
'No, I can't find any trace of your message; would you kindly
resubmit it?'
4. Consult my unfailing voice of reason, Andrew Carnie--
'AC, I need your advice...again.'
5. Delete it--URGENT AND CONFIDENTIAL
I love power... But the most rewarding part of being LINGUIST's Editor
in Chief is dealing with you, LINGUIST's readers. You're always
patient, polite, and tremendously grateful. Most of you are friendly;
some of you are funny. I feel like I know many of you, even though
we've never met. That's the remarkable thing about LINGUIST--it brings
together radically different people, from distant parts of the globe,
all in the name of linguistics. I'd like to personally thank you for
doing your part to make that happen.
Karen Milligan
Editor in Chief

The LINGUIST List 'Just $5' Request - Please make a difference!
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
