Description:

UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY

Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Second Language Studies

The University of Calgary invites applications or nominations for a
Tier I Canada Research Chair in Second Language Studies. Associated
with the University's newly established Language Research Centre and
collaborating with a wide variety of units interested in second
language phenomena, the Chair holder will be expected to establish and
sustain a vigourous research programme, encourage interdepartmental
and interdisciplinary interaction, and demonstrate leadership in a
domain, Language Learning and Literacy, identified as contributing to
the University of Calgary's research strengths and constituting one of
its areas of international prominence.

The Language Research Centre undertakes advanced research on second
language learning and language pedagogy, and on the effective use of
technologies in these areas, while at the same time addressing policy
issues impacting on second language education. The Centre provides a
central point of contact on second language research between the
University of Calgary, the community, and government. In addition to
developing the Language Research Centre, the University is committing
significant additional resources to the study of second languages,
including two related positions in the Departments of French, Italian
and Spanish and Germanic, Slavic and East Asian Studies, as well as
proposals for research Chairs in both English as a Second Language and
in Literacy. The incumbent of this senior Chair in Second Language
Studies will hold an appointment in one of the Departments closely
allied with the Language Research Centre (e.g. languages or
linguistics) while helping to consolidate interdisciplinary research
in second language acquisition and pedagogy, pursuing leading-edge
research, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and
contributing to the public discussion of language-related issues.

The Canada Research Chair (CRC) programme has been established by the
Government of Canada to enable Canadian universities to attain the
highest level of research excellence. Further detailed information on
the CRC programme, conditions of employment and the Chair selection
criteria may be found on the CRC programme web site:
http://www.chairs.gc.ca.

Those interested in obtaining further information concerning the
Language Research Centre are invited to contact Professor John
Archibald, current Director of the Centre (archibal at ucalgary.ca).
They may also wish to consult the Centre's www site:

All applications for the Chair should include a letter of

diversity.
