Description:

The Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS is a research institute of
the Faculty of Arts of Utrecht University. About 100 researchers are
involved of which 14 full professors, about 10 faculty, 10
postdoctoral researchers and about 40 graduate students. The goal of
UiL OTS is to develop scientific expertise in the area of language,
speech and their use. The institute closely cooperates with other
scientific institutions in the field. It is the penholder of the
Netherlands Graduate School in Linguistics (LOT) and participates in
the Dutch graduate school in Logic (OzsL). UiL OTS is looking for
ambitious and enthusiastic candidates for

4 graduate positions
(vacancy No. 68260)

Suitable applicants are expected to contribute to research into the
mental systems that underlie language, speech and their use. These
positions are open per January 1, 2004. UiL OTS's research comprises
the following seven areas: Syntax and Semantics, Morphology &
Phonology, Computational Linguistics & Logic, Phonetics, Language
Development, Language Use and Experimental Psycholinguistics. This
research programme brings together different strands of linguistics
and disciplines such as logic, computer science, cognitive sciences,
teaching, and the social sciences. UiL OTS is the only Dutch research
institute to bring together all these different types of research. Its
research policy is focused on making full use of the added value
associated with this concentration of expertise.

Next to innovative monodisciplinary research, specific domains of
interdisciplinary cooperation involve a wide range of topics, varying
from research into the structure of the grammatical system (where
generative and logico-semantic approaches join forces) to text
evaluation and design; from the set-up of a systematic data-base
capturing the variation between languages, to the division of labour
between components involved in language and speech; from language
acquisition to language pathology; etc.

Candidates are invited to apply in either of two ways: by submitting
an original research proposal that fits into the overall UiL OTS
programme, or a proposal based on one of the project summaries (see:
http://www-uilots.let.uu.nl/ma-phdprog/phdprog.htm#list )

The graduate position offers a track towards a Ph.D. thesis to be
completed in maximally 4 years. As part of their training students
attend graduate courses organised by LOT and/or OzsL.

We are looking for ambitious candidates who show enthusiasm for
scientific research and an evident interest in one or more of the
areas of the UiL OTS programme. Eligible candidates must possess a
pre-doctoral academic degree (MA) in linguistics, phonetics,
psycholinguistics or some other study with sufficient background in
linguistics. Candidates expecting to graduate before January 2004 can
also apply.

We offer an appointment for up to 4 years as research assistent (under
the provision of a positive assessment after 1 year), within a
stimulating and innovative environment with many international
contacts (guest researchers, international co-operation programmes)
with a Ph.D. programme that offers the opportunity of advanced
education in a broad area of linguistics, state-of-the-art
experimental and informational facilities, and excellent opportunities
for attending conferences. The salary will be in the range of 1501
(before taxes) increasing to 2143 full-time. All hirings will conform
to the union approved terms of employment for Dutch universities.

Applications should mention the vacancy number and should be
accompanied by the following materials: a research proposal, an
extensive curriculum vitae, a list of relevant courses successfully
attended and the grades obtained, two referents (preferably, enclose
the letters of reference with your application) and a copy of the
MA-thesis (or a paper with comparable status).
