CALL FOR PAPERS

Abstracts are invited in all areas of linguistics for the Annual
Meeting of The Michigan Linguistic Society.  Presentations will be
twenty minutes in length plus five minutes for discussion.

Abstract submission guidelines:

* Deadline for RECEIPT of abstracts is September 5, 2003.

* Abstracts should be limited to 500 words excluding references.

* The title of the abstract should appear at the top of the abstract
  and the abstract title, author's name, affiliation, and email
  address should appear on a separate page (if abstract is submitted
  as an attachment or in hard copy).

* Abstracts should be submitted by email to mls2003 at umich.edu as
  part of the message text or as a PDF or Word file attachment.

* Abstracts may also be submitted in hard copy by faxing three
  copies to the attention of MLS Abstract Review Committee at
  734-936-3406 or mailing three copies to MLS 2003, Department of
  Linguistics, 4080 Frieze Building, University of Michigan, Ann
  Arbor, MI 48109-1285.

* E-mail submission is strongly encouraged. Abstracts received after
  September 5, 2003, will not be considered.

Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously, and notification of acceptance
will be sent by September 12, 2003.  Registration and other conference

Conference participants are also welcome to attend the NORTH AMERICAN
UNDERGRADUATE LINGUISTICS CONFERENCE, which will be hosted by our

undergraduate conference will be Lila Gleitman of the University of
Pennsylvania.

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

deadline for submission: APRIL 2004

We will organize the panels for the Association which will meet in
conjunction with the International Association of Semiotic Societies
that will meet in Lyon from July 7-12, 2004. We will hold our meeting
concurrently with theirs, with the possibility of people going to
sessions at the main meeting, and their members sitting in with us and
perhaps schedule a small reception where those who are interested can
find out about us.

The theme of the international conference is Signs of the World:
Interculturality and Globalization, and while papers directed toward
that very broad topic are welcome, in the spirit of Bobbie Kevelson we
are of course open to all varieties of LEGAL SEMIOTICS and LAW AND
LANGUAGE.

If you are interested in participating, please send me a short
(paragraph length abstract) your name, title, and contact
