Call Deadline: 15-Jan-2004

Meeting Description:

Workshop title:
Diachronic Perspectives on ESP -
The case of business and official correspondence from ME to LModE

Convenors:
Marina Dossena, University of Bergamo
Susan Fitzmaurice, Northern Arizona University

Aim of the workshop:
While studies on present-day ESP are certainly numerous, the
historical background of specialized discourses is far less frequently
discussed, albeit with the notable exception of scientific texts. The
aim of this workshop is to bring together scholars whose studies may
shed light on various aspects of business and official correspondence
at various times in the history of the English language, thus
contributing to the outline of the historical roots of present-day
'business English'. As the contributions are likely to share common
themes, methodologies and data, as they may well fit together in terms
of quality and focus, they could be expected to be published in an
independent volume, edited by the convenors, rather than as a section
within the Conference Proceedings. The workshop itself will take place
during the main conference, i.e. not before or after it. This will
make it possible for interested colleagues to partake in the workshops
even if they do not actively contribute. We expect the workshop to
have a maximal duration of two half days, which could accommodate
10-12 presentations, in a format which is compatible with the main
conference programme (half-hour presentations including question
time).

Possible topics include:

* Methodological issues concerning the diachronic study of ESP;
* Issues in pragmatics (the study of politeness markers, applications
of social network theory, the expression of power and solidarity,
evaluation and self-evaluation);
* Uses of modality and other stance features in business and official
correspondence;
* Cases of code-switching and code-mixing;
* Diachronic variation in official, business or diplomatic letters
(e.g. stylistic, lexico-grammatical, situational differences);
* Exploration of register differences within the domain of letters
(how do business, diplomatic or official letters differ from one
another linguistically, functionally, physically?);
* Codification and practice (the prescriptions offered in
letter-writing manuals and the realization of actual texts);
* Cross-genre investigations (links existing among official, business
and legal texts);
* The linguistic expression of cultural specificity (e.g. in texts
originating in Scotland, Wales or Ireland).

Deadline for abstracts:

Prospective participants should contact both convenors simultaneously
and provide a working title. A 500-word abstract should be submitted
at the same time. Please note that the absolute deadline for
submission of workshop abstracts is 15 January 2003. Acceptance will
be notified by 20 February 2004. Because participation in ICEHL is a
precondition for workshop participation, workshop participants need to
register for the conference as well.
