Research Post: Senior Research Officer, Welsh Grammar

Applications are invited for one fixed term Senior Research Officer
(RAIA) post in grammar development for appointment from 1st April 2004
to 28 February 2007 in the Department of Language and Linguistics,
University of Essex. Closing date for applications is 9th February
2004, with interviews for the post to be held as soon as possible
thereafter.

The successful applicant will participate in a newly funded
collaborative ESRC-funded project on ''Verb-initial Grammars: a
multilingual/parallel perspective'' directed by Dr. Mary Dalrymple (at
King's College, London) and Dr. Louisa Sadler (at Essex).

The project will develop broad-coverage mputational lexicons and
grammars for two verb-initial languages, Welsh (Celtic) and Fijian
(Austronesian), within PARGRAM, an existing collaborative project to
develop computational grammars within a shared linguistic framework
LFG) and based on common linguistic assumptions (current PARGRAM
members include Palo Alto research Center, California, Fuji-Xerox,
Japan, the University of Bergen, Norway and the Universities of
Stuttgart and Konstanz, Germany).

The person appointed at Essex will be responsible for the development
of the Welsh grammar and lexical resources.


Candidates should have:
 - a good honours degree in linguistics, Welsh, computer science, or a
   related discipline
 - a high level of competence in Welsh
 - an ability to work independently and collaboratively


A postgraduate research degree or experience working as a researcher
would be an advantage as would knowledge of a contemporary
constraint-based syntactic theory (LFG or HPSG).
