AFLS Workshop for potential postgraduates in French language studies
This *free* workshop is for potential postgraduates in all areas of
French Language Studies and is organised by the Association for French
Language Studies (AFLS).
WHERE? Birkbeck College, University of London (room 1074, main
Birkbeck bulding, Malet Street, Bloomsbury; next to Senate House)
Please note that this is NOT a publicity event for any particular
institution or Department, but is part of a general AFLS drive to
increase the number of postgraduates in our discipline.
The programme will include short talks, Question & Answer sessions and
time for for small group or individual discussions. It will cover:
GENERAL & PRACTICAL ISSUES An overview of different possibilities at
Masters' level and beyond; funding and career opportunities; what
being a postgraduate is really like at the various stages; what to do
in order to start next year.
AREAS OF FRENCH LANGUAGE STUDIES AND POSSIBLE RESEARCH
TOPICS
A panel of experienced researchers will outline what work in their
areas involves, and suggest some priorities and possible topics for
research projects. Areas will include:
* Description & Analysis of French (in its different
varieties) - Phonology, Grammar, Lexis, Discourse;
* History of French;
* French, Second Language Acquisition and other areas of
Applied Linguistics;
* Sociolinguistics and French, including Variation.
Speakers will include:
Professor Jenny Cheshire; Dr Jean-Marc Dewaele;
Professor John Green; Dr Florence Myles;
Professor David Trotter.
Some help with travel expenses will be available to students
(Finalists or M.A) coming from a long distance, and who attend the
Workshop for the whole day.

Meeting Description:
The Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics will hold its 2003
conference as part of the Congress of the Social Sciences and
Humanities at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from June
1st to the 4th. Members are invited to submit abstracts for single
papers as well as symposia.
ABSTRACT REQUIREMENT
1. Abstracts for single papers should be no longer than 150 words and
must be typed in Times New Roman (font 12). They can include
references but should not contain a bibliography. Abstracts for
symposia should include a general description of the symposium (150
words) as well as a description of each panel member presentation (150
words).
2. Please add five key words describing your research.
3. In order to help ensure anonymity, abstracts should not contain
excessive reference to its author's publications.
4. Abstracts should contain
a. a title (for the symposium indicate a main title as well as the
title of each presentation)
b. an indication of the main arguments involved
c. a statement of conclusions reached and an assessment of their significance
d. the name of the author(s) or the name of the coordinator as well as
the name of each presenter for the symposium
e. their affiliation
f. their e-mail address as well as their postal address
g. It should also mention if the author(s) require(s) audio-visual material
5. Only the abstract meeting the above criteria will be evaluated.

L'association canadienne de linguistique appliquée tiendra son colloque
de lan 2003 au sein du Congrès des sciences sociales et humaines à

2003. Les membres de lassociation sont invités à soumettre des
propositions pour des communications ainsi que pour des symposiums.

c) les conclusions et une évaluation de leurs portées

f) leur adresse électronique ainsi que leur adresse postale
g) Elle doit aussi indiquer les besoins en matériel audio-visuel.
5) Seules les propositions qui respectent toutes les consignes seront
prises en considération.
