Abstract:
A Grammar of Uzbek is a comprehensive descriptive academic reference
grammar of Modern Uzbek, the official language of the Republic of
Uzbekistan. It is comprehensive in that it accounts for every
grammatical phenomenon identifiable in a broad scale of primary
sources. Its method is descriptive in the traditional sense: it
presents, explains and illustrates in sufficient context the elements
of all segment of the Uzbek grammar: phonology, morphology, syntax,
and lexicon. With these qualities the work goes beyond the limits of
normative, or prescriptive grammars of the Soviet period and therefore
is exempt of formulating or enforcing norms, in any cultural political
agenda. The grammar of Uzbek is presented as it appears in a vast
array of source materials from the works of Abdulla Qodiri to Odil
Yaqubov and other representative modern writers of the Uzbeks. The
spoken language and the language of the media were also considered
from materials collected in field trips, or contributed by native
speakers and consultants. The best yields of Uzbek and Russian
scholarship especially from the Soviet period were among the valuable
secondary sources and carefully studied. An important feature of the
work is that illustrations for structure or content are not made?up
sentences or phrases but quotes taken directly from prestigious
primary sources with sufficient context.
