We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at
http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

I've been looking for the origin of the famous structuralist dictum
that a language is 'un système où tout se tient'. A search of the
net finds it variously attributed to de Saussure or to Meillet (I
believe the latter is correct), but NO reference! Can anyone supply
the reference? Thank you!

Dear colleagues
A student of our program of postgraduate studies needs information
about the problems that American linguists had in order to translate
Vietnamese language to English during the Vietnam War. She is now
working in Language Acquisition. Could you send her some kind of
bibliographical information?
Her e-mail address is:

Thank you very much
