Linguistic Sub-field: Discourse Analysis

Meeting Description:

First Announcement for 1st International Conference on Critical
Discourse Analysis which will be celebrated in València,
5-8/05/2004

Critical Discourse Analysis has proved to be one of the most
interesting and fascinating fields of linguistic endeavour in the last
few years as it relates directly to society and history. Far from
considering language as an abstract entity, CDA treats language as
social practice in accordance with the ideas expressed by the founder
of systemic functional grammar, M. A. K. Halliday. The origins of CDA
can be found in classical rhetoric, text linguistics and
sociolinguistics, as well as in applied linguistics and
pragmatics. The CDA approach is multi-disciplinary not only due to its
origins but also because of the methodology which it employs.
Moreover, its object of study, that is, texts, often belong to two or
more media and consist of diverse genres, expressed through oral and
written mode, verbal and visual discourse, etc.

FINAL VERSION

1st International Conference on Critical Discourse Analysis
I Congreso Internacional de Análisis Crítico del Discurso
I Congrés Internacional d'Anàlisi Crítica del Discurs

València, 5-8/05/2004

Research in this area is wide-ranging and impinges on a large number
of important issues for our society: ideology and its representation
in texts, discourse in mass media: advertising, news reporting,
discourse in ITC; the representation of identity in many genres, i.e.,
gender, race, etc.

The founders of this approach form an eclectic and multi-disciplinary
group of researchers and include, among others, N. Fairclough, T. Van
Dijk, G. Kress, T. Van Leeuwen, R. Fowler, R. Wodak, Eija Ventola,
etc., some of whom will participate in this conference.

For all these reasons, we believe that this conference will be of
great interest as a venue for the exchange of knowledge among the
researchers who are working within this approach and as an
introduction to this school of thought for undergraduate and post-
graduate students.

The conference will be held at the la Universidad Internacional
Menéndez Pelayo in the Pineda Palace, an 18th century building in the
heart of the old part of the city, the Barri del Carme. Historically
this part of the city was inhabited by the craftspersons alongside the
nobility and contains several interesting churches and convents as
well as the Palau de la Generalitat, the seat of local government. In
the last decade, many palaces, convents and buildings belonging to the
nobility have been restored and transformed into museums, university
colleges and offices for the local administration.

The barri del Carme offers visitors a wide range of cultural events
and, at night, its innumerable bars and restaurants are frequented by
diverse sectors of society.
