The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.
This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Research Assistant/Research Associate
£18 - £27K (dependent on qualifications)
Fixed-term from Sept 2003 -- February 2004
Queen Margaret University College has acquired a Merlin (Bruel and
Kjaer) ultrasound instrument to image tongue movements during
speech. The output is captured on video and is synchronised with the
speech audio signal and other, physiological measures. You would be
required to ascertain the applicability of measurements of tongue
configurations to a wide range of subjects, and to test the
reliability and repeatability of measurements obtained. Dependent on
your skills there would be scope for involvement in development of the
system itself.
You will have either a good Honours degree or post-graduate degree in
Speech Science or a related area, or a qualification in Medical
Physics. A Speech and Language Therapy qualification would be highly
suitable provided good skills in speech science could also be
offered. With excellent interpersonal skills, you will have the
ability to develop a good rapport with research subjects. The ability
to prepare research reports is essential.
