Workshop on Knowledge Markup and Semantic Annotation

Date: 25-Oct-2003 - 26-Oct-2003
Location: Sanibel, Florida, United States of America
Contact: Siegfried Handschuh
Contact Email: sha at aifb.uni-karlsruhe.de

Linguistic Sub-field: Computational Linguistics
Call Deadline: 21-Jul-2003

Meeting Description:

Capturing knowledge by using markup techniques and by supporting
semantic annotations is a major technique for creating metadata. It is
beneficial in a wide range of content-oriented intelligent
applications. One important application, for instance, is the
Semantic Web. Here, knowledge markup is a major challenge, i.e. the
problem is the providing of knowledge structures for existing
syntactic or multimedia resources. The workshops intend to bring
together researchers and practitioners from such communities as W3C,
MPEG-7, AI, Natural Language technologies and KR to discuss various
aspects of knowledge markup and semantic annotation.

				     Workshop on

                      Knowledge Markup and Semantic Annotation

* linguistic aspects of semantic annotation
* capturing knowledge through Information Extraction and NLP
* text mining for creating knowledge markup

STRUCTURE

The basic organizational structure of the conference will be as
follows:

- Plenaries by international leading figures in the field. The
following topics will be covered:
Dr. D.ª M.ª Luisa Calero Vaquera (Universidad de Córdoba): A Short
Grammar in Romance by Juan Robles (16th century).
Dr. D. Miguel Casas Gómez (Universidad de Cádiz): The Linguistic
Status of the Displicines Applied to Semantics.
Dr. D. Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez (Universidad de León):
Conversational Syntax.
Dr. D. Ángel López García (Universitat de València): Biological
Evolution and Linguistic Evolution.
Dr. D. Jesús Tuson Valls (Universitat de Barcelona): The Metaphor on
the Origins of Language.
Dr. D. Juan A. Villena Ponsoda (Universidad de Málaga): Social
Network and Regional Variation.

-Round table: The situation and role of General Linguistics within
university institutions will be discussed .

-Papers.

-Intersection and contrast of papers on the same subject-area. Papers
will be selected for this purpose and authors will be informed well in
advance.

-Research panels showing work done by the various General Linguistics
research groups in Spanish universities.

- Social activities
Apart from the academic and scientific activities of the conference,
there will also be a social programme including an official reception,
a Santiago guided tour with information on the Pilgrims Way and
gastronomy.

 PAPERS

1. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is October 15,
2003. The text (about 500 words, single spaced, 11-point Times New
Roman font) must specify the object and the structure of the paper.
Two copies must be sent to the conference organizers: (1) a
hard copy is to be sent to the Congress secretariat; (2) an electronic
version (Microsoft Word 97 RTF format) must be sent as an attached
file to the following e-mail address: viclg3 at usc.es. The subject line
of the message must contain the title of the section where the author
would like his/her proposal to be included.
With both copies of the abstract the following information
must also be sent on a separate sheet: a) name of author(s), b) postal
address, c) telephone number, d) e-mail address, e) title of the paper
and section where it is to be included.

2. Notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent out to authors
during November 2003. During the first two weeks of March 2004, the
authors of the accepted proposals will send three copies (two hard
copies and an electronic version) of the first draft of their paper,
which must be as complete as possible. Participants intending to give
a paper are warned that, given the particular structure of the
congress, it is absolutely essential that these deadlines be met
without exception.

3. Speakers will have a maximum of 20 minutes to present their paper
in the ''regular paper'' sessions.

4. Once the presentation is over, the speaker will hand the
chairperson two hard copies and a file containing the final version of
the paper (preferably in Microsoft Word 7.0 for Windows or a
compatible word processor). The diskette label must contain the
following information: a) operating system and word processor used (if
relevant, any other computer programs that may have been used); b)
name of author(s); and c) title of paper and topic area.

5. The final version of the text must conform to the guidelines that
will be enclosed with the notification of acceptance.

6. Participants are reminded that, as a rule, all communication with
the organizing committee will take place via e-mail.

PANELS

Panel sessions for research groups in the area or General Linguistics
are also contemplated. In addition to the scheduled presentation of
their work with Powerpoint, each research group will be allotted some
space to display all the information they consider relevant so that
they are able to respond to demands for further information regarding
their research on the part of other participants. Those interested
must contact the section coordinators to know all the details about
this activity.

CERTIFICATES AND CREDITS

Attendance and participation certificates will be issued on request.
Official recognition of 1 credit for students of the University of
Santiago de Compostela attending the congress has been applied
for. Those interested should state so in the registration form, since
their attendance will have to be verified.

FEES

- Students and unemployed (with evidence of status: proof of current
enrollment or unemployment card): 30.
- Regular attendance rate: 60.
- Participants with paper (entitled to a copy of the proceedings): 150
before January 31st, 2004; 190 from that date up to April 23rd, 2004.
Payments must be made to the following bank account: 0049 2584 90
2214002210 (Banco Santander-Central Hispano).

The completed registration form must be sent to the Congress
