Subject: Degree in linguistics at UPF, Barcelona
Degree in Linguistics and language technology at Universitat Pompeu
Fabra (Barcelona)
Beginning in the 2003-2004 academic year, UPF will offer a two- year
taught program of study leading to an officially recognized
upper-division baccalaureate degree (honors degree) in Linguistics
(''licenciatura de segundo ciclo''). The goal of the program is to
train specialists in linguistics with a good command of the skills
needed for working in various areas of language technology. Emphasis
is placed on the computational side of traditional areas of
linguistics, and programming, statistics and formal languages are
taught from the very beginning. Most courses will be taught by faculty
from the Departments of Translation & Philology and Computer Science.
In addition, students may choose to do both Linguistics and the
''second cycle'' of Translation and Interpreting in three years
(rather than the expected four years) and obtain two ''licenciaturas''
simultaneously. There are a number of openings every year for direct
access into the ''second cycle'' of Translation and
Interpreting. Applications for Linguistics and Translation and
Interpreting must be submitted separately (students already in the
''first cycle'' of Translation and Interpreting at UPF can also apply
to Linguistics and obtain two degrees in five years).
To join the program candidates must either possess an undergraduate
degree which has been officially recognized by the Spanish Ministry of
Education or have at least completed the ''first cycle'' (generally,
the first two years) of any official four-year or five-year Spanish
degree. In 2003-04 the program will accept a maximum of 60 students.
Applications for the academic year 2003-04 must be submitted between
June 30 and July 16, 2003 (a second application period will be held
September 4-10, 2003, if any openings remain unfilled). More

Traducció i Interpretació, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, la Rambla
