Subject: How To Find Stuff on LINGUIST - A Guided Tour
Dear Linguists,
Did you know that finding stuff on LINGUIST is just a mouse click
away? Yes, you can now search the entire LINGUIST site and database
for information by subject language, linguistics subfield, and/or
keyword. Let us begin this interesting journey to uncover this unique
feature by visiting
http://linguistlist.org/search-all.html.
Here, you can choose the type of resource (like book or dissertation)
that you are interested in -- and you can choose multiple resource
types, or better still, you can choose all the resource
types. Previously, if you were looking for dissertations about
Japanese, you could go to the publications area and use the
dissertation advanced search and come up with 29 matches. Now, with
this search feature, you can find not only dissertations, but also
journals, conferences, papers, books, reviews, jobs, calls, linguists,
linguistic programs, and web sites devoted to Japanese -- all with a
single search command!
This search facility will offer a way to keep up with what's new in
your field. For example, if you want to find out all the information
in the field of phonology, you will retrieve nearly 750 resources: 302
Book(s) 60 Book Review(s) 33 Calls/Confs 78 Dissertation Abstract(s)
33 Job(s) 1 Journal(s) 29 Linguistic Program(s) 181 Linguist(s) 34 Web
Resource(s).
You can also begin this interesting journey from our homepage by
scrolling down the 'Search' drop down and clicking on 'Search LINGUIST
Site'. We hope this search facility will be a great help to you in
finding information quickly, accurately, and easily. However, we need
funding to maintain these free services to you. We have (and need!) a
staff of graduate students, most of whom are funded wholly or
partially through your donations. Your contributions not only help
LINGUIST provide services like the search facility, but they also help
these outstanding students achieve their academic goals. Please make a
dontation to keep the list running.

Dear Subscribers,
Making all of our services possible: our running backbone servers
Since the LINGUIST began its service to the community in 1990, the
kinds of service and the number of subscribers has expanded
significantly. Through years of your generous donations, the hardware
supports of our website have grown at the same pace to accommodate
ever increasing web-visiting traffics and the software
needs. Currently, LINGUIST web-site has a total of 4 Sun Solaris
Workstations. They are responsible for different tasks.
The first one, Linguist server, is our gateway server. This is
probably the first and most significant one. It's holding all of our
archiving issues starting from early years. If you read any URL link
from our website starts with "www.linguist.org....", it means this
page is from this server. The Linguist server witnesses the whole
developing history of Linguist web-site.
The second one, Saussure server, is named in honor of French linguist
deSaussure. Two years ago, our web-site began to implement relational
database and use cold fusion web programming language. The Saussure
server takes the burden to house both cold fusion web application
server and Oracle database server. The Linguist crew has spent
countless hours categorizing all the information and links from our
archive warehouse, creating thousands of records which are dynamically
searchable by linguistic subfield and subject language. You may notice
that almost all of our minisites are starting URL from
"saussure.linguist.org....". Also the Saussure server is currently
holding the EMELD project's endangered language data. Because Saussure
is the most overloaded server, you may have experienced impatience
waiting for a page to load during peak traffic time. To improve our
service in the future, we need to upgrade the server. Of course, the
task can not finish without your help.
The third one, Victoria server, is designed to hold OLAC (Open
Language Archive Community) data. This server collects information
about language resources and creates resource catalog to make it
searchable.
The forth server currently running in our site is Listserv; this
server stored all the user mailing list. All mailing lists has been
categorized by region, which increases mail sending efficiency.
As the Linguist web-site continues to expand, we will have more
hardware to better serve our linguist community. Please help us with
our fund drive and make a donation.
Sincerely,
Zhenwei Chen

Subject: How to Donate to LINGUIST and Contributors So Far
This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew
for your support.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
