Subject: Food For Thought
In keeping with our theme of Food and Cooking this year, here's a
message from Margaret Winters, who sits on the LINGUIST List Board of
Advisors.
And remember, we need to reach $10,000 by Saturday 15th March to get a
$1,500 donation from John Benjamins.
Dear Colleagues,
Allow me to offer some food for thought: without the nourishment of
the LINGUIST List we would be a far hungrier community, thirsting for
communication and starving for contact. We would not be able as
easily and as thoroughly to satisfy our need for data, for references,
for all the fresh ingredients for a well-prepared paper, article, or
book. In gratitude we need to nourish the List, through our virtual
participation and through our very real cash. Consider yourself as
supporting a true feast for the intellect and for the spirit, and, for
your donation of $50, find feasts for the body as well in the LINGUIST
List Cookbook.
With best wishes and gratitude,
Margaret Winters

Please help us reach our target of $50,000. Even a small donation
really does make a difference. So far we have raised $8,150, but we
need to get $10,000 by Sat 15th March!

Subject: The Server Software on LINGUIST
Making all of our services possible: Our web-programming software
Dear Subscribers,
Since LINGUIST began its service to the community in 1990, both the
kinds of service and the number of subscribers has expanded
significantly. In the last 2 years, our website has successfully
transformed from an old static data format site into a new dynamic
data format site. Thanks to the modern database technology, we
installed an Oracle 8 relational database as the central piece of data
storage. It provides our site with the necessary mechanism to
guarantee the data's permanence, security and efficiency. Numerous
programming tasks can be finished before sending them to the Cold
fusion web application server. With dynamic data storage, we can
refresh our data almost instantly. For example, just after you click
the "confirm" button in our donation page, your name will be displayed
on our donor list page. The "Thank you" letter will be automatically
sent out by the system, and the fund-drive total will be refreshed--
all in a matter of seconds! Since our database is Unicode-compatible,
it can handle whatever language script linguists summit to us. At the
same time, all personal data can be encrypted before storing it in
order to maximally protect people's privacy. So you can imagine the
efficiency database technology will bring to us.
Working together with the Oracle database server is the Coldfusion web
application server. It works as a liaison between the web browser and
the database. The script running on the Coldfusion server controls the
data running logic(the data inflow and outflow). When it gets a
request signal from your home/office PC, it takes in all user input,
processes it (possibly retrieving data from database), and returns a
response page to user. Through this three-tier architecture, user
browser, Coldfusion web server and Oracle database server, we generate
the most efficient data you need from thousands of thousands of stored
data.
In all, our web system has become more and more complicated as the
years goes on. This results in our enhanced capability to serve the
linguistic discipline. And everything we have achieved so far links to
your support year after year. Without subscribers' support, there
would be no improvements, and in short, no LINGUIST.
Sincerely,
Zhenwei Chen
Programmer

Subject: How to Donate to LINGUIST and Contributors So Far
This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew
for your support.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
