Subject: The Cost of a LINGUIST Graduate Assistant
Dear Linguists,
$50,000 is a lot of money to ask for and you may well be wondering
what we do with it all. The biggest cost by far on LINGUIST is for the
Graduate Assistants who run the List. Each year we have to find the
money to pay their stipends and tuition in order for LINGUIST to keep
running; without the GAs the list would grind to a halt, and without
the money there would be no GAs.
At Eastern Michigan University, the basic cost of tuition for a
resident GA, based on the figures for 2002/03 is $246 a credit
hour. On top of this there is a $20 a credit hour General Fee plus a
$10 a credit hour Technology fee, so the total for one credit hour at
EMU is $276. Over two years a graduate has to take 30 credit hours to
be awarded the masters, making a total of $7,380.
That's for a resident. As an international website that acts as a
hub for worldwide linguistics, LINGUIST needs (and wants) to have
international students on staff. As you are more than likely aware,
universities generally charge more for foreign students. The current
cost per credit hour for a foreign student is
$530, making the total for a two year masters $15,900.
And then we have the Graduate Assistant stipend. GA's get $8,300 the
first year and $8,500 the second year, that's a total of $16,800 that
has to be found to feed, cloth and house the LINGUIST students. This
stipend, however only covers the Fall and Winter semesters - as you
know linguistics is a year-round operation and LINGUIST List does not
shut down during Spring and Summer. In fact, this period is very busy
for us. So we have to employ students on an hourly rate. So at a rate
of $11 an hour at 20 hours a week, for ten of the twenty week period,
this would total $2,200. International students are not allowed to
work off campus due to visa restrictions, so they do need to get paid
in order to stay here.
The estimated grand annual cost for a GA to work on LINGUIST List,
therefore, is $19,000 for a resident and $27,520 for a
non-resident. Out of our 19-member current staff, 11 are GAs, either
at Eastern Michigan University or Wayne State University. Seven are
resident and 4 international - that's an estimate of $243,080 - a
scary sum to come up with.
Of course, we look for funding not only from the generosity of our
subscribers, but also a variety of places to cover a big chunk of this
bill. For a start we have to thank the academic publishers who support
LINGUIST, and many linguistics departments and private organizations
make donations when they announce their jobs. Also we have in the past
received Graduate Assistantships from both The Graduate School and the
English department at EMU and Wayne State U., but due to cutbacks in
state allocation of funds, we cannot expect much internal support this
year. This will leave a big hole in our budget.
Please help us fill this hole! We hope that the services we provide
are useful to you as linguists. If you will donate, we can maintain
services that are accessible to everyone and free of charge.
Yours sincerely,
Richard John Harvey
Editor, Publishing and Finance.

We received this wonderful message last week, so good that we thought
you might enjoy it. A big thank you to Robin Thelwall for letting us
use the message. We have included our Editor-in-chief's response for
your entertainment as well.
********************************************************************
Dear Linguist List,
I thought about cutting you out of my will. I thought about not
donating this year because, finally, after three? or was it four or
five?? donations I finally got my sweatshirt last year. Or had I run
out of cash? I thought about Canadians not getting a tax advantage -
and the lumber problem and the steel problem and now the wheat
problems, and -- so what? BUT then I thought, I've been reading your
pressing emails since the mid 90s in Hong Kong and, since moving to
Canada in '96 I've had the entertainment of applying for jobs in Fiji,
and Cypus and not getting them - and thinking about applying to Taiwan
and China and who knows where else. And the fact that you are in
Ypsilanti - and what Byron-supporter could reject that? And I once
spent a roadside halt in Battle Creek and thought of visiting - but
who should I ask for?? Well, the end of it all is - I have to give
you another donation this year. I know, I know - You shouldn't
support such a non-partisan body, my radical friends cry - BUT you do
a good job, so I'll pay!!
Robin Thelwall
Calgary
PS I made my donation via your webpages!!
*************************
Dear Robin Thelwall,
Your loyalty (and perserverence) will not go unrewarded. Are we really
in your will?
I'm glad to hear you finally received your sweatshirt--probably around
mid-August, eh? I'm happy to be able to tell you that the past 4 years
of practice (as well as the implementation of a database sytem)are
going to pay off this year. You will marvel at our efficiency; you'll
be shocked by our speed. I don't think anyone's ever put us in their
will.
The next time you come this way, if you find yourself in either
Ypsilanti or Detroit (we're not all at EMU!), do come in to see
us. We'll buy you a drink and talk about Fiji and Cyprus and Battle
Creek.
Thanks for your donation--and for those you've sent in the past. It's
your support that makes Linguist possible, and keeps this love-hate
thing going!
Best regards,
Karen Milligan
ps--don't touch that will.

Subject: Spotlight Our New Staff
Dear Subscribers,
If you've been reading LINGUIST for more than a year or two, you have
probably noticed the proliferation of names on our home page--the
number of student crewmembers has increased from 14 to 21 since last
year! And you may be wondering why LINGUIST would need a crew so
large. As the number of services and features we provide increases, so
does the number of tasks necessary to maintain them. LINGUIST
crewmembers have always been multi-talented, but the growing mountain
of tasks eventually became too much even for a crew of 14 extremely
capable grad students.
The solution was to hire a new group of students. And what a group it
is! I don't know how Helen and Anthony do it, but they always seem to
attract the brightest and best. Our seven newest members are no
exception. In fact, as someone who has trained new editors for the
last four years, I'd say this new 'crop' tops them all! Not only did
they learn the ins and outs of editing and posting (in record time),
but it seems they can do everything else, too! Their knowledge of
computers is nothing less than amazing,--a real asset given the
increasingly technological nature of many of LINGUIST's new projects.
But on top of all that, they are just such great people--willing to do
whatever it takes to make LINGUIST run smoothly.
So, without further ado, we present...
Marisa Ferrara, EMU: A first-year linguistics grad student from
Sicily, Marisa is focusing on sociolinguistics and language
description. She also has a pilot's license and is currently learning
to juggle, play the banjo, and make great sushi (not an easy feat for
a pure-bred Sicilian)!
Naomi Fox, WSU: As a military spouse, Naomi lived in many places
before landing in Michigan in 2001. During that time she worked as a
library technician, computer assistant, and teacher of English as a
Foreign Language. Now, in addition to working on her Master's in
linguistics, Naomi also teaches art and computers in a small
elementary school.
Anita Huang, EMU: Originally from Tapei, Taiwan, Anita is a world
traveler, speaking Mandarin, Taiwanese, English, and German. She is
most interested in the areas of syntax and semantics. And...she is the
mother of our newest little linguist, Daniel!
Lakshmi Narayanan, EMU: Lakshmi read about Helen and Anthony and the
projects they had going in an article in the Ann Arbor News right
around the time she was quitting her full time job in the Information
Technology department of Washtenaw County Government. Although she
had no formal training in linguistics, her lifelong interest in the
field inspired her to get in touch with Helen and VOLUNTEER her
services! Yes, you read right; she works for free (which, I think,
says a lot about both Lakshmi and LINGUIST!) She took an intro course
in the fall, and with your support, she hopes to get the funding she
needs to enable her to continue her studies next year.
Sarah Murray, WSU: An undergraduate senior at Wayne State University
pursuing a double major in linguistics and philosophy, Sarah's primary
interests are logic, the philosophy of language, and formal
linguistics--specifically syntax and morphology. Upon graduation in
May, Sarah will begin work on her Master's at WSU. She is also a
photographer and excellent cook!
Prashant Nagaraja, EMU: Prashant is a programmer with a Computer
Science degree from India. He is currently pursuing his Master's
degree in Linguistics (yeah, we got him!), focussing on different
programming issues.
Sobha Siripurapu, EMU: Our newest crewmember, Sobha comes to us from
Vijayawada (which is in Southeastern India) with a graduate degree in
Electronics & Communication Engineering and a Master's degree in
Computer Science. In addition to her mother tongue, Telugu, Sobha also
speaks English and Hindi. Her interest in the English language has
inspired her to enroll in the Master's program in Linguistics at EMU
next fall.
You may get to know some of these crewmembers in the process of
submitting an announcement or asking for help with that forgotten
password. But whether you get to know them or not, you will see
evidence of their skill every time you use LINGUIST. Of course, the
reality is that these new crewmembers are linguistics grad students
whose education is being funded in part by LINGUIST. It's your
contributions that make that funding possible. Please show you support
and take a moment to contribute to our fund drive. You'll be glad you
did; so will our crew!
Thanks,
Karen Milligan

Subject: How to Donate to LINGUIST and Contributors So Far
This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew
for your support.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
