Subject: All About Reviews on LINGUIST
Dear LINGUIST subscribers,
Providing LINGUIST List book reviews is one of our core services in
the publication area. Last year we posted over 200 book reviews, and
in the first two months of this year we have already posted about 50
reviews. This past year, we also added all the reviews that have ever
appeared in LINGUIST (about 900 altogether) to our publications
database, linking them to the announcements of the books that they
review. In addition, as each new review is posted, it is immediately
linked to the appropriate book announcement.
The Reviews index page on the LINGUIST website can be accessed by
clicking on "Publications", and then "Reviews". Facilities are
provided on that page for browsing or searching for specific reviews
by author or title, for listing all the reviews of books produced by
specific publishers, and for immediately accessing all the reviews
posted in 2003. The URL for the 2003 listing of reviews is
http://linguistlist.org/issues/indices/Review2003r.html
And to find the listing of reviews for any other year from 1994 to
2002, simply replace "2003" by the desired year in the URL. We plan to
add additional functionality to this page in the coming year.
Our process for selecting reviewers remains the same as in the
past. We first announce books as AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW at the beginning
of each month, except January, (see the most recent one at:
http://linguistlist.org/issues/14/14-327.html). We invite subscribers
to tell us which books they're interested in reviewing, and their
qualifications to do the review. Review editors Terry Langendoen and
Simin Karimi then meet to select reviewers by matching prospective
reviewers' qualifications with the books they are to review. Once
reviewers are selected, we mail books out to them. Reviewers receive
a book with our detailed review instructions and are asked to send
their reviews back to us electronically within six weeks. Simin and
Terry check the content of reviews to maintain high quality of
reviews, and student review editor Naomi Ogasawara formats and posts
them on the LINGUIST List within 48 hours after their submission.
The interest of our supporting publishers and of our subscribers in
our review service is very high, judging from the number of books we
receive for review, and the number of responses we get to each of our
calls for reviewers. We are interested in your suggestions to make our
review service even better. Please write to us at
simin at linguistlist.org, terry at linguistlist.org or
naomi at linguistlist.org.
We believe we provide an excellent service at low cost. But we do have
costs. Simin and Terry contribute their time, but Naomi like every
other student editor, receives support for her graduate education in
linguistics, in part from LINGUIST. We also have substantial mailing
costs. We encourage you to support LINGUIST with your currency of
choice.
We also welcome your reviews of the cookbook, though we reserve the
right not to post them.
Sincerely yours,
LINGUIST List Reviews at University of Arizona

Subject: Spotlight Naomi - Student Reviews Editor
Greetings!
I have been working for the LINGUIST List for almost four years. I
became one of the most experienced (?) editors (of course, No.1
experienced and best editor is our chief, Karen!).
LINGUIST List is fascinating to me in many ways. It has been
providing very high quality services for subscribers for more than ten
years; I can only imagine how hard that must be. Whenever I think
that I make a contribution to the linguistics community through
LINGUIST List, I feel proud of myself.
Moreover, I have learned a lot about computers through my work at
LINGUIST List. I still remember on the first day of editor training,
everything looked very high-tech and complicated, and everyone looked
super-intelligent to me. I was very amazed, and at the same time I
was so scared. I am still amazed at everything about LINGUIST List,
but not scared any more. I am very happy about working with
super-intelligent, wonderful, fun-loving crew. I always had fun
working in the office (although we sometimes had to fight for
candies).
Last summer I moved to Tucson, Arizona to pursue a PhD degree. I was
extremely sad to leave EMU. But I had to move on. I joined the
LINGUIST List Review Team at University of Arizona, working with other
super-intelligent, wonderful, fun-loving people--Terry, Simin and
Andrew. I hope someday soon all the LL crew will gather in Tucson and
we'll have a big party in the Sonoran desert!
Naomi Ogasawara

Subject: How to Donate to LINGUIST and Contributors So Far
We need to raise $50,000 this year to keep LINGUIST alive - so far we
have $12,166.33, which is really good, but it is still a long way to
go! Please make a donation.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
HOW TO DONATE
You can make a contribution by selecting one of three convenient
