Subject: Calls and Conferences - Important Information...
Dear Linguists,
Posting calls for papers and conference announcements is one of the
most essential services we provide for the linguistic
community. Conference organizers worldwide rely on LINGUIST List to
disseminate information about their meetings, and the number of calls
and announcements that we post increases from year to year. In 2002,
we posted 904 calls for papers and 299 conference announcements or
programs.
In response to the huge amount of interest that this service
generates, we have developed the Calls and Conferences Area as part of
our new website. Now you can submit a conference announcement,
program, or call for papers quickly and conveniently via a web
form. Your conference will then be listed on our site and will be
classified by linguistic sub-field and subject language. Our users
will also be able to search for it by title, location, date, keyword,
etc. The new Calls and Conferences Area is available at
http://linguistlist.org/callconf
Another fascinating feature of this new area is the possibility to
browse through all upcoming conferences, or just those that are still
accepting papers for presentation, sorting them by date, linguistic
sub-field, or subject language. For each of them, we list detailed
contact information, submission requirements, and/or the most recent
program. Finding out about conferences relevant to your research has
never been so easy!
However, in order to continue and develop our services for another
year, we need your support. LINGUIST List owes its existence almost
exclusively to the donations of the linguists and other benefactors
all over the world. During Fund Drive 2003 we need to collect $50,000
- this will fund our student editors, whose number grows together with
the number of issues we post and the size of our website. So far, we
have received $16948.33 thanks to the generosity of the persons and
institutions whose names appear at the bottom of this page. If you
found out about a conference through our postings, or if you
successfully replied to a call, please show your appreciation by
making a donation. In return, we will show our appreciation by
continually improving our website and our services.
Also remember that by donating $25 or more to Linguist you qualify to
receive one of the fabulous gifts that you can see at
http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html
This year's special gift is The LINGUIST List Cookbook, which includes
secret recipes for delicious dishes that will convince even your most
fervent opponents to accept your theories (at least when it comes to
cooking), and the matching apron--indispensable at those frequent
occasions when linguist meet to exchange ideas over a delicious beef
roast or a tray of freshly made fudge. Other gifts include all-time
favourite baby T-shirts, tote bags, and T-shirts.

Subject: Look Inside The LINGUIST List Tool Box...
This is just a short note to let you know about all the text and
computer tools that you can find on our website...that is, you can
find it here if you continue to support us. It is largely taken from
our text and computer page at:
http://linguistlist.org/tools.html
If you haven't seen this page, check it out!
We have 42 links to various text and corpora sites, including the
British National Corpus, The Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language
(COLT), and Project Gutenberg e-texts. We have 6 links to various
style guides. We have 75 links to various software programs and sites
which are subdivided into the following subcategories: Computer Aided
Translation, Diagram Display, Fieldwork, Historical Reconstruction,
Lexicons, Natural Language Processing, and Other. You can find links
to 25 font sites, including 4 sites that have an IPA font. We have 39
links to various bibliography website, including a page on Agreement,
Romance Linguistics, and Chinese Language and Gender. We have 222
links to varios dictionary websites, including a Celtic-Italian
dictionary, a Sweedish-Danish-Norwegian dictionary, and several
Portuguese dictionaries. And lastly, we have 9 pages on Markup
Languages.
You might wonder why all these links take any maintenance. They are
just lists of links. Well, links go bad. They get moved or get erased
or something else happens. People provide us with these links. We have
to make sure that they are linguistic. This takes time, not a lot of
time, but some time. Between the thousands of links we have on our
site, this does actually take quite a bit of time.

Subject: How to Donate to LINGUIST and Contributors So Far
This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew
for your support.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
