After ten years as editor of Computational Linguistics, Julia Hirschberg
will be stepping down.  We are pleased to announce that the ACL
Executive Committee has chosen Robert Dale of Macquarie University as
the next editor.

For the 2003 transition, Julia Hirschberg will continue to handle
papers submitted before June 1, while Robert Dale will handle those
submitted after that date.  Authors should now be submitting papers

Subject:  Third RH Robins Prize of the Philological Society

PhilSoc is awarding a 3rd RH Robins student Prize for an article on a
topic within its area of interests as defined by the Transactions of
the Philological Society.

The prize is awarded in open competition, and is open to anyone who is
both:

(i) a PhD student (on 1-NOV-04); s/he should submit a letter from
his/her supervisor, or similar, attesting to his/her status and that
the submission is his/her own work); and,

(ii) a (Student Associate) Member of PhilSoc (membership available on
submission).

The article submission may be based on the planned thesis. The article
should not have been published before (except, e.g., as a working
paper), nor submitted for publication elsewhere.

The winner will receive a cash prize of £500 sterling. Additionally,
the winning article-following revision-will be accepted for
publication in the Transactions. In making a submission, an author
undertakes to give the Transactions first refusal to publish the
article. If no submission is judged suitable for publication, the
prize will not be awarded. If non-prize-winning submissions are judged
to be suitable for publication, then these, too, may be accepted for
publication.

The prize will be awarded by the Council of the Society on the
recommendation of a prize committee. The Council will take into
account originality, expression and theoretical/empirical
contribution.

The closing date for submissions is 1 November 2004. Submissions
should be written in English. They should not exceed-but need not be
as long as-10,000 words in length including tables, figures, notes,
appendices, references, etc. Three copies should be submitted; they
should bear the title of the article but not the name of the
author. The three copies should be accompanied by a sheet with the
title of the article and the name, affiliation and correspondence
address of the author.  They should also be accompanied by the letter
mentioned in (i) above. The article should follow the style sheet of
the Transactions. A copy of the style sheet can be found on the
Society's web site: http://ling.man.ac.uk/More/PhilSoc; an abbreviated
version appears in the editorial matter of the current issue of the
Transactions. Entries should be addressed to the President of the
Society, Professor N. Sims-Williams, School of Oriental and African
Studies, Thornhaugh Street, London WC1H 0XG, Unit!
 ed Kingdom.

The winner will be announced at the Society's Annual General Meeting
in May 2005, and the prize will be awarded when the final version of
the article is published in the Transactions. It is expected hat the
prize-winning article will appear in Transactions Vol. 104.

The Council's judgement is final. No comments will be passed to the
authors of non-prize-winning submissions and the Society cannot enter
into correspondence about articles other than the prize-winning
submission.
