Meeting Description:

Offering a platform for an exchange of ideas on the latest
developments in research into the in-group languages of young people,
the conference in Zurich maintains a tradition initiated in Osnabruck
in 1998 and continued in Wuppertal in 2001. The main focus will be on
theoretical considerations, new empirical results, but also on needs
and requirements and plans for forthcoming projects.

The following 5 sections are planned:

1) Comparisons between youth cultures and in-group languages at
international level
- in-group languages within and outside Europe
- comparison of youth (sub-)cultures
- youth movements in the past and today

2) The language of young people in media and communications research
- research into the communicative behaviour of young people
- the use of language in the internet and mobile phone communication
- media for young people (magazines, websites, television and radio
channels)
- body language

3) The language of young people from the linguistic and language
didactic aspect
- analysis on the lexical, syntactic and pragmatic level
- suggestions for the teaching of German as a mother tongue and as a
foreign language
- reflections on their use of language with young people themselves

4) The language of young people in the spectrum of varieties of
language and multilingualism
- dealing with varieties of language and modes of expression
- young people's use of language and / in dialect
- young people's in-group languages and multilingualism

5) The language of young people in academic and public discourse
- The language of young people as a subject of language criticism
- The language of young people and language change
- The language of young people, colloquial varieties, standard
varieties

Given the venue of the conference, papers on young people and in-group
language phenomena in Switzerland are particularly welcome
(e.g. interferences between dialects and other varieties,
interferences between the national languages, research into the
in-group languages of young people in the non-German speaking areas of
Switzerland). Furthermore, a lecture on gerontolinguistics will be
given, intended to provide an insight into the research in the
language varieties of elderly people as well as to encourage an
exchange of ideas with regard to research into the language of young
people.

Conference languages:
The languages of the symposium are English, German, and French.
