Subject: Introducing FL at College Level
Dear Colleagues:
I just joined the listserv and am interested in feedback on a course I
teach at Youngstown State University, where I have been on the faculty
of the FL department for 18 years. My main language is Russian, and
YSU is an open-admissions institution with a foreign language
requirement. Having noticed that our students are often behind the
starting gate we presuppose for college students, I lobbied to create
a course for students who have little or no previous exposure to
FL. Concurrently, I am a member of the ''Visible Knowledge Project''
(consortial), which works on issues of humanities education and
technology, and as a continuation of these activities, I am planning
to offer my course as a ''distance learning'' opportunity. Is anyone
aware of similar efforts, or interested in some collaboration?
An on-line poster of my project ''Making Sense of FL Study'' is
available at http://crossroads.georgetown.edu/vkp under ''People and
Projects'' for ''Melissa Trimble Smith''. Thanks for your feedback.
