'In this issue, Penny gives us an unusual look inside the experience
of a reader in a typical US state-level writing assessment. Tens of
thousands of teachers (and apparently, in the US, laypeople) read test
essays every year. Penny provides a sobering reminder of how little we
understand their experience and its impact on decisions about
people. Cho describes an attempt to apply some principles of process
writing theory in a fairly traditional context with, we may think,
rather mixed results. The care of the attempt is worth our
attention. Lee returns to the topic of what teachers know and do in
responding to student writing and re-emphasizes for us how much
remains to be done in teacher education. All these articles remind us
that, although progress has been made in assessing writing, much more
